Hotel Leninabad: Khojand
Mari and I stayed at the Hotel Leninabad for one week in July, 2003.
The hotel costs 28 Somoni (US$9) for a double room. If you pay in Somoni instead of US$ it works out slightly cheaper.
The rooms are very basic but make sure you have one that has a view over the main river in Khojand. It also means you get a slight breeze in Summer. Running water starts at 5pm every night and hot water starts (most) nights at (about) 7pm.
When you leave your room it is perfectly safe to leave your key with the Babushka that looks after the floor. She also looked after our passports but I don't know if that was a good idea (but she had all the guests . We only carried it when we went to Istaravshan.
We didn't mind the hotel but I have to warn you that our standards are not very high. If you are looking for luxury you should stay at the french NGO guesthouse.
Unique Quality: Downstairs from the foyer is the restaurant which opens about 5pm. Mumin the bartender speaks a little bit of English and is a very nice guy. His father is the cook who makes a delicious dinner and loves to chat (in Tajik). Great way to meet the locals (all the other guests were CA locals) in a safe, cheap environment.
The outside of the building displays bullet holes from when it was the centre of a battle between Tajik soldiers and Uzbek rebels.
