Royal Ploughing Festival
by balhannah
This Festival is held on a different day each year, but usually its in May. This year, was Monday, May 11th, and because of this, it was declared a Public Holiday. If you are here when its on, like I was, there are lots and lots of people. The event marks the beginning of the Rice growing season. The Royal oxen plough a field which is in Sanam Luang Park. The Oxen are offered 7 dishes of different foods on a tray, and what they choose to eat, determines what the season will bring. It is predicted that there will be abundant crops, food and water supplies for this year.
This event happens every year.
visit the Royal Palace....
by Hazel_
visit the Royal Palace. Remember that clothing plays a very significant part of the culture. Females must wnot wear short dresses or open toed sandals to enter the Palace compound. You will be turned back by the palace guards. They will provide you with the appropriate apparel in the lodge at the entrance, for a smallish fee. The guards outside the actual Palace building do not like people getting too close to them for photos, and carry guns that are loaded. Don't embarrass yourself or your country of origin by annoying them. Riding the river in a longboat. An experience not to be missed. Hair raising and exhilarating to say the least. An interesting comparison to the more affluent areas of Bangkok. The aroma of the city has to be smelled to be believed.

Convention Centre custom
by Minstrelette
I worked at a convention at the IMPACT convention centre. In addition to the purpose of the convention, they have other things throughout the day that make the convention an event. They had local entertainment (one day there was a teen pop star), royalty came the first day (the was a BIG deal), and every morning they had a local boys marching band to start the day. I've been to conventions in many places in the world, and I've never seen so much local pride than in Bangkok. I asked a woman who worked at the centre if all the fanfare was typical, and she said yes. So if you have a convention here, be prepared for some colour to your otherwise mundane day.
Passing in Front of People!
by machomikemd
Among other actions that might seem harmless to you, passing things in front of people (instead of behind) or stepping over a sitting or lying person’s legs (even in crowded places) are considered very offensive. If you have to pass between two people, you should lower your head slightly as a mark of basic politeness.
