Security situation in Bangkok

by guruprasadrao

We are planning to visit Bangkok for a conference in November. Is it safe to travel to Bangkok and tour around the city? Asking this because I read that the army has been deployed in Bangkok since 14th Oct to prevent possible bombings, unrest etc.

Bangkok is about as safe as you can get, maybe safer than your own capital city.

No one has a crystal ball that can predict what will happen on any particular day, something could happen in your own country that is unanticipated.

Look at all of the hoopla on safety in Europe because of Muslim terrorists, if you listen to the news reports and heed them, no one would be going to Europe! People in Europe are probably saying "what's the problem, I don't see anything!"

Even during the past protests by Red Shirts tourists still showed up in Thailand by the thousands. Some just found other areas of Bangkok to stay in or just went off to other cities in Thailand.

Bangkok has excellent transportation. New Rail Link from the airport, Skytrain, subway and meter taxis cheaper than in Western cities.

Will something happen in Bangkok - don't know! Will something happen in your own capital city in November?

Between now and the end of November probably a million tourists would have arrived and departed Thailand.

Up to you.

The army, in the streets, is the scary part. But, they only hassle Thais, not tourists.

Like floods, political chaos is more or less an annual event in Thailand, and yet still the tourists keep coming. Yes, yes, it is safe -- safe even in Bangkok, as long as you take the precautions that being in a city of 10 million people requires. You will have a much better time if you are not looking over your shoulder all the time for danger of one kind or another. It's a great place, Thailand. Enjoy it.

by suebali

Bangkok is cheap place...food are delicious and the people were so friendly..always smile just like balinese people...
Khao San Road will offer you a great budget travel you have ever want...try the cafes along the road..youll find it very affordable especially for the westerner
the nightlife was wonderful...thai girl really like "falang" very much haha the pollution in bangkok hahaha...i guess more than in jakarta :P
but bangkok has a wonderful temples and shrines...unique float market just like what we have in kalimantan..yeah!
i had some great pictures about bangkok but for some reasons i have lost them on my way back home :((

Visit the floating market...

by kucha

Visit the floating market outside the city. Once again, so much rain, but that made travelling by water seem all the more natural. Take a boat and plan on spending the day perusing the many 'floating stores' and 'dockside stores' you will encounter in this famous landmark.

Best beaches in Thailand

by bulldogtwo

Can't believe that I am the first to answer this but I assure you I wont be the last. There will be alot of "best beach" answers for you!
My best beach may not be white sandy but it's a great beach. Between Phuket and Khao Lak there is the Haad Thaimuang Natioanl Park. The beaches there are desolate, no one on them hardly ever and they are great for swimming. We were on the beaches for 3 days and never had another person on the beaches with us. There is lodging within the park HQ area, although I regret not checking them out. Khao Lak also has great beaches, not a lot of tourist, there are a few but not alot during the (nov) time that we were there. Been to Krabi, not nearly as good as the Andaman side. Rayong, Ko Chang also not as good but not bad. This of course is all a matter of opinion, right.
From Ko Chang you will have to get back to Bangkok and proceed form there. If you only have 4 days I would fly, www.airasia.com You wont save all that much money but you will save an entire day travel, 2 if you count coming back.
Don't know what time of the yeear you are talking about either. Should you really want some white beaches you may want to check out Kho Lipe or the Similan Islands, both of which will take some more travel time but are nice. Time of year also makes a difference here as they are closed in the off season.
Good luck and Have FUN!

Yellow, for the King

by balisunshine

If on a particular day,
the majority of the population
is dressed in yellow shirts,
it’s in honor of the King.

Yellow shirts are sold a every other corner,
and the people of Bangkok,
proudly wear them with pride.

Especially this year
to celebrate 60 years of the Kings reign.

The essentials for the shopping gal in bangkok

by yukisanto

Bring an extra collapsible bag with you for all your victory goods. You'll need it, trust me. or you can buy that bag from the city itself, but why spent extra on such stuff when you can spend it on new clothes? Best is sandals for shopping, or flats, or anything you can slip in and out easily. If you're going to temples, another pair of sneakers pls. Leave your heels at home, you're already gonna need those foot massages even if you're wearing flats.
Clothes - no skimpy stuff. Just decent, "least hot as possible without showing too much skin". Oh and it has to be fitting enough so that you can try the store's clothes on the spot without changing clothes (most of them have no fitting room). If you're going to the temples, knee length skirts/jeans are a must, as are sleeves. There are medical pharmacies along the streets. You can get most of what you need from there. But since most don't speak English, you can also do it the same way as I did - phantomine. We got our cream for ankle sprain and the cough tablets that way. LOL Umbrellas are a must. Sunglasses too. Not forgetting those precious bottles of sunblock and moisturiser. Maybe, the whole bag of skincare regime, considering how bad the air in Bangkok is for the skin. I even brought my moisturising masks along.
