Good stay in Erawan House, Bangkok

We had a really great stay at Erawan House, on Soi Chanasongkram, a 5 minute walk from KhaoSan road. At 800baht a night it's in the vicinity of a mid-range hotel, and is very clean and quiet. The staff are helpful and friendly to a fault, there are free lockers and aircon/TV/ensuite for most rooms. The location is excellent, close enough for a casual saunter to Khaosan, without having to sleep over the shouts of drunken louts. The river ferry stops just over the road. The internet isn't good value, but you can shop around. The restaurant on the other side of the Soi is a good and clean one too, despite the touristy-looking menus.

New Siam Guesthouse

by CureTheSane

Thinking about doing something a bit different this time and book accommodation in the Khao San Road area ahead of time.

We will be on our honeymoon, and will have a nice hotel in Phuket, with pool access balcony etc.
In Bangkok however, we aren't after anything too flash, we'd rather spend money shopping etc, and it seems a bit silly to spend a lot on a hotel which will essentially serve as a place to collapse in a bad after the long days sightseeing and shopping.

So the New Siam Guesthouse seems to fit the bill quite well.

any good/bad/indifferent reviews?

Searched the net for reviews but didn't track down much.

Thanks
Martin

somtimes its hard to book places ahead of time in khao san area, best bet is to get there, then find a place, they often look nice on net and outside cleverly disguised but inside not nice !ask to see a room in guest house and if you dont like it move on to the next one ,there is hundreds also the slightly nicer, cleaner quieter ones are located just off khao san road so you are still near the activity and still cheap , i stayed at 3 id recomend ,check out www.sawasdee.com and www.wildorchid-villa.com and there was erawan house but i couldnt find that on net ! but these are cleanest i saw and cutely decorated, basic ,cheap -500 bht ,friendly staff ,walking distnace from khao san ,temples and the river.
have fun

Are you looking at New Siam II - or the original - the newer guesthouse is nicer - and its in a quieter side street. Really pleasant, and great value.

Yeah, I found a few reviews for the New Siam Guesthouse II one and they were all pretty much raving about it.
Only complaint seemed tobe that the rate went from 350B to 750B over the last few years, but at 750B it's till reasonable value.

The New Siam Guesthouse I doesn't seem to be reviewed on the net much at all.
I only really found 1 where they recommended the 'II' as it was much nicer than the 'I' For the 100B I'll happily pay the bit extra.

Sounds like they're both in a good position though, right on the river.

And II is much nicer - well worth the few extra $$ if you can afford. Its actually one of the nicest guesthouses over there - and in a really good location.
