Khao San Road

Khao San Road is certainly not the most authentic place to stay in Bangkok for an authentic Thai experience but no one can argue with the convenience. Buses drop you right on the doorstep, there is ample inexpensive accommodation, and there is a plethora of cheap and tasty eats beckoning you. I think if I ever stayed in town for more than a few days, I’d try and different location, but since I always seem to be in transit, I tend to take the easy way out. That said, there are plenty of escapes close by so don’t feel obliged to hang where everyone else inevitably does.

Unique Quality: Kawin Place is one good reason to stay here. It is very clean; the staff is friendly and helpful without being intrusive in any way. It is right on Khao San Road but set back quite a few hundred feet so it’s quiet given the location. The rooms are simple but the air conditioning is explosive. It’s a real plus if in the city during the hotter months. It is true you can get a much cheaper room without a/c, but it seems like money well spent when you come home dripping sweat, day or night. Another big plus is the close proximity to some great cheap local eats. There are lots of backpacker specials in this area but you can also easily find true Thai cuisine at rock bottom prices. Oh, and a double is only 450 Baht ($11) a night.
