THAI NAME FOR THE BUSIEST FOLATING MARKET

by limkahwan

WHAT IS THAI NAME FOR THE FAMOUST FLOATING MARKET IN CHAO PHRAYA RIVER? IF WE TRAVEL IN THE RIVER WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY TO GO TO THE MAIN MARKET

Re: THAI NAME FOR THE BUSIEST FOLATING MARKET

by peteyjim

We grabbed a longboat for the floating markets outside of the Grand Palace. The dude went down some side river and said "floating market", upon when some lone old lady paddled out to us with some bananas and beers in an esky. We were then prompted to buy a beer for the longboat driver. Um, yeah. This aint the right floating markets!!!

The famous floating markets are a bus ride (just organise a tour) outside of Bangkok. Well worth it. Sorry, I cannot remember a name. Google will point you in the right direction. or www.sawadee.com (A handy thai site).

They are both in the same area, on the way to Hua Hin, about 1 hr out of Bangkok. Amphawa is the traditional looking Thai one and Damnoen Saduak is the hideous tourist trap.

Re: THAI NAME FOR THE BUSIEST FOLATING MARKET

I believe Amphawa is working overtime to catch up!

Re: THAI NAME FOR THE BUSIEST FOLATING MARKET

I hope it doesn't. Still, very few tourists there, but packed tight with Thais.

the "touristy" floating market is Damnoen Saduak. Takes a bus-ride to get there. You can go on your own or take an organised tour, which mostly stops at "The Rose garden" (Thai show) along the way.

But i suggest you go to another place in Thailand not far from Bangkok

And you can see the Firefly's at night.

"Here's one in Bangkok but it's faraway The market name is (Bhang Nham Pueng)"

Although obscure, it's actually closer than most of the "famous" markets.

"Damnoen Saduak is the hideous tourist trap."
Hmm, maybe it is but it did it for me!

Re: THAI NAME FOR THE BUSIEST FOLATING MARKET

I liked it too, something you have to see when going to Thailand.

Re: THAI NAME FOR THE BUSIEST FOLATING MARKET

Yep tourist traps can get hideous, but they become that way because it's worth seeing I guess. I've got some great photos from it, had some nice fried banana from the food stalls, and enjoyed the whole day... Just like the good ol' James Bond Island tour.

Bak to the original poster, I hope you find the markets you're looking for! you've got a few choices now, so start googling for images and pics and chose what you want. And have a mai tai for me.

Damnoen Saduak is quite touristy, but surprisingly, many who visit Thailand are tourists and are looking for that "picture postcard" market.

Just got back from Bang Nam Pheung.

Travel Tips for Bangkok

Wat Arun

by herzog63

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) is on the Thonburi side of the river and is pretty easy to get to. Just take the boat across the river from the Tha Tien boat pier. It is very close to the Grand Palace. There are pleasant grounds to walk around and of course the temple is nice. You can climb up some fairly steep steps to get some nice views of Bangkok too. It costs 10 Baht to go in. Be careful of using the cutouts for pictures. There aren't any signs up asking for money but some sneaky guys hang out waiting for you to use them and then try charging you 40 Baht! They will get pushy but are willing to bargain and if your persistant enough there probably won't be any charge. Wat Arun looks very impressive as you ride by in a Long Tail Boat!!

Try the Chicken Steak

by i-s-a

I love this chicken steak. The meat is tender and quite juicy too. Ordered this from one of the stalls in Chatuchak. Cost me about B75 including pineapple juice.

Chatuchak is too big for me...I forgot the name of the eatery...sorry.

Note:
Part of my second visit to Bangkok in March 2005.

Muang Boran ~ Mondop of the Lord Buddha's Foot

by Audrey118

The Mondop of the Lord Buddha's Footprints at Saraburi

The footprints of the Lord Buddha at Saraburi has been a sacred place of pilgrimage since the Ayutthaya period. The interior of the mondop housing the footprints is decorated with glass inlay, an decorative style popular during the reign of King Prasat Thong and King Narai the Great. Actually, the impression of the Lord Buddha's footprints at Muang Boran was presented President Venkatagiri of India in 1972.

The language ...

by shrimp56

Fortunately most signs that you will need are in both Thai and English, such as this one in a Sky Train station.
.
Do learn a few phrases in Thai before you go -- but a warning -- it is a tonal language and you're likely to make a mess of anything more than those few phrases.
.
The best to learn are:
sawatdee kha [for a woman] = hello/goodbye
sawatde khrab [for a man]

khorb koon kha [khrab] = thank you

mai pen rai = nevermind, doesn't matter
mai ow = I don't want

Packing List

by Babybeary

Just bring along your luggage to contain your clothes and daily necessities. To contain the stuff that you bought, you can purchase all kinds of bags at a relatively cheap price there. This will help save some luggage space when you arrive at Thailand and is also an excuse for you to get a new bag. :p As the weather is warm, light clothings are recommend. Sunglasses will also be handy.
