"my human rights training in october 2004"
my first time that i went to bangkok thailand was during my international training on human rights of women sponsored by the Swedish International Cooperation Agency in October 2004 (imagine two weeks!). I was totally blown away by my experience (thai food, bargain clothes, culture, palaces, buddhas, foreigners/tourists, great companions/participants from Philipines and other Southest Asian countries)..I promised myself then that I will come back to Bangkok for avacation...

My Latest Trip to Thailand

"It Just Keeps Getting Better"
My latest visit to the Land of Smiles ran from the latter part of November to just before Christmas of this past year. Although I was there primarily for business reasons, I managed to squeeze in a bit of R'n'R down on Koh Phuket (Phuket Island).
Frankly, I didn't cotton to Phuket as much as I thought I would. We stayed just outside of Patong Beach on the west coast of the island and had rented a small jeep. We toured much of the island but found that signage in the Town of Phuket was miserable and it took quite a while to figure out how to exit the Town, even with my Thai wife trying to help me decipher the maps!
We stayed at the Baan Nern Sai lodge on a hill overlooking Patong. Dutch owners and a mix of guests. Only 23 rooms so crowds weren't a problem. The place is only about 10 month old and is a good place if you don't have to stay on the beach.
Lots to see on the island and we really enjoyed the aquarium on the southeast coast. Worth the trip. We found a good restaurant, the Joyee or close to that name, in Patong. Friendly staff and the owner was great. He also owns a travel agency and we used his services for a day long boat trip around the waters there. Great photo opps.
Once again, we stayed in Pattaya as well. I do like Pattaya even though we don't drink alcohol and I don't take advantage of the open night life there. Basically, we walked; sat on the beach of our hotel, the Cosy Beach. I don't recommend this hotel. Unfriendly staff and half the flies in Thailand swarm around the buffet food in the morning. The hotel caters mostly to cheap tour groups. We won't stay there again.
There are more updated tips on my Thailand page elsewhere. Bye for now.
"And Here We Are Again"
Back in The Land of Smiles (Thailand) during March and early April, 2001. This time only for leisure and family visits. In Bangkok, we stayed at a hotel new to us, Majestic Suites, located on Sukhumvit Soi 4, south side of Sukhumvit, around the corner from the Nana Hotel. Majestic is a kind of "boutique" property--small, fairly new and very clean. On-site management and quiet rooms. We paid 1400 baht per night including breakfast. In-room safe too.
My Thai wife and I spent a week in Jomtien again and just sat on the beach from early morning to late afternoon every day. We also visited my in-laws who live in a small village outside of Nakhon Sawan, which is itself a 3-hour bus trip north of Bangkok.
Hot, hot, hot everyday and no rain during our entire stay. The family compound is not airconditioned but one of the houses is large and cool. I couldn't believe how hot the kitchen was. The kitchen is really a partially open addition to the house and has a propane stove that really cranks up the heat.
We visited several Wats in the area, and I particularly liked the one that has hundreds of resident monkeys and dogs. Watching the two interact is very interesting. Once again, had a great time and I hope to revisit Thailand in September.

Did anybody stay before in Hotel Majestic Suites in Sukhumvit? I will stay there for three nights in February. From there homepage it looks quite nice. Any good or bad experiences?

Hi, I stayed there a couple of years ago. the room I had was very noisy there was a disco next door right below my window, there is no pool and taxi's can't really stop outside because of the junction, they normaly drop you off at he Landmark Hotel about 100 metres away or at the filling station opposite, although breakfast was included it was not a buffet breakfast just eggs bacon and toast with juice and tea or coffee. the upside is it is in a very good location right near the BTS.
