taxi fare from phaya thai BTS to robinson bangrak
by musaphir
hi
can any member let me know the approximate fare from phya thai BTS to Robinson Bangrak. i can appreciate that it would only be an indication as factors like traffic congestion and the route will affect the actual fare. a guideline however, will help.
regards
musaphir

Robinson's Bangrak is a very short walk, just north of the Saphan Taksin BTS station. Buy a fare to "Saphan Taksin", then hop on at Phayathai BTS station. You will need to transfer trains at Siam, two stops from Phayathai. Transfer to the line heading towards "Wongwian Yai" Get off at Saphan Taksin.
There, walk towards the main road, away from the river. The big road will be Chareon Krung. Turn left and Robinson's will be less than 100 meters.

Do you need that particular Robinson Department Store or will other Robinson stores do? Some are easier to get to using the Skytrain. One on Sukhumvit and one near Patpong are real easy to get to.
Copy and paste this link for more suggestions:

Good luck.

hi SirHalberd
really appreciate your response which is very helpful but i am afraid this enquiry is destination specific and an elderly traveller will be accompanying.hence i need the information requested in my initial post. would like to be ripped off the minimum possible.

There are, indeed many variables. I would guess that if you get lucky, with no traffic, you might be looking at 50 baht. On a bad day, possibly 70 baht or more.
If the driver doesn't know Robinson's Bangrak. Tell him Center Point Silom. It's the same place.
Travel Tips for Bangkok
Shopping
by warzx
Here's a note to highlight. Thai shop owners value their first customer. If u happen to be their first customer, and u have gone thru the bargain process, u better honour ur last price that u have bargain, otherwise they will bad mouthed u and if u walk away without buying, they will close their shop and re-open again. This is because, the first customer is very impt to them. And if u successfully buy the item from the shop as a first customer, they will be very happy to serve u and will use ur money notes to beat the items on sale in their shop while chanting "heng heng, heng heng", means good luck, good luck. Usually they will compromise the bargain of the first customer, provided it is a reasonable price. i miss the flea markets and the food there!
Floating Markets
by syllybabe
There are many floating markets in and around Bangkok but we insisted on going to the famous one in Damnoen Saduak. I would have enjoyed it more if I had a hat and I was prepared for the heat with sunblock but since I wasn't, I was in the boat but anxious to get out of the hot sun. Most people we saw hired a motorized boat but we wanted a rowboat so we could go slow and take pictures. I'm glad we did. Motorized boats, although faster, are also noisy. The best part was buying fruit and food from the vendors in their own boats, too. We had coconut pancakes (yummy) and noodle soup, pomelo, sticky rice cooked inside bamboo. I would do it again...and if you get a chance to do it, don't miss it.
Thailand Vaccinations
by bulldogtwo
Whenever this questions comes up I always suggest getting the hepetitus shots. Michale and BKK Kid are correct in that you don't "need" to get anything and for the most part Bangkok and most parts of Thailand are safe. Getting the hepititus shots are just a safeguard, which you can get in any city or country in the world.
Should you decide to get them it does take several months to get the series, I think 6-8 months.
Good luck and have FUN!
spirit houses
by trisanna
I have fallen in love with the Thai spirit house. There are two kinds-the wooden old fashioned kinds and the painted cement ones. The cement ones have different styles of architecture-thai, khmer with a giant prang.
Spirit houses are placed in a certain corner of a person's property. They believe that their deceased relatives will come and stay here on their journeys. People will put offerings, such as food, cigarettes, toys and will wrap the spirit house in colorful ribbon. Many will be adorned with strings of fresh flowers-such as jasmine and marigolds.
if you really love spirit houses-you can buy small wooden ones at chatuchak weekend
dress sensibly for the temples
by richiecdisc
A backpack makes navigating busy Bangkok streets a tad easier. Light weight long pants/skirts are essential for temples and its best to cover your shoulders too. This goes for men and women. You'll need a wide angle to get bigger than life buildings like the Grand Palace in. A great travel partner like D comes in handy.
