Alternatives to the Arnoma Hotel in Bangkok

by sebth85

Hi all,

I'll be staying in Bangkok on-off over the course of the July 6-Aug 1 for the Asian Cup.

Most people I know are staying at the Arnoma Hotel, but it's probably just a shade out of my price range. However, I want to be very close by to them (no more than 5-10mins walk), and want to stay in the best place I can without paying more than A$70/2000 baht ($35 each for twin share).

Ideally looking to pay around $20 each, but don't know if I could get anything that's clean and basic in the area for that price.

Does anyone rate any of the following? How far away are they?

- Rajtaevee Residence
- PJ Watergate Hote
- Best Western Baiyoke Suite Hotel
- Asia Hotel
- City Inn
- Century Park Hotel
- Indra Regent Hotel
- Moeleng Boutique Residence

Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks guys, much much appreciated!

Hi,

I have booked Arnoma for 11 days via asiarooms.com @ 70 $/night .

Try asiarooms.com for best price.

Hi -

personally I enjoyed my stay at the Indra Regent; it was comfortable and clean, although it does show its age in places. It's close enough to the Arnoma not to have to worry about the length of the walk.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy :)

Yeah, the length of walk is something you can't really gauge from maps. On some it looks 2 minutes, on others it looks like it could be 15!

Cheers for the advice...if anyone has any other past stories or experiences...would love to hear about them...

I'm a complete novice, I've never travelled, and I'm really relying on the good-will of others to help guide me through!

At the moment, we're probably keen on the following (in no order):

- PJ Watergate Hotel (A$32 = $16pp)
- First House Hotel (A$25/44 = $12.50/22pp)
- Baiyoke Suite Hotel Bangkok (A$51 = $25.50pp) (the reviews of this one vary a bit, although it seems people who complain quickly get upgrades to much nicer suites!)

...is it too much to ask to stay in a place that's in a relatively close location, had nice, clean, safe facilities...and doesn't cost the earth? Or is that asking a bit too much!

Thanks all :)

Hi there.

I think you should consider Samran Place. It is within walking distance from both Pratunam and Skytrain station (Ratchathewi). Price on asiaroooms is 975 thb/night.

Hi,all
My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights in January 2009 room was very clean fairly small but adequate with very clean bathroom. Room was opposite a half built multi storey block of something or other on which the work had ceased presumably as a result of the credit crunch so for us no problem of noise, The staff were friendly and helpful and when the reception couldn't speak english they would get someone who could. Breakfast was nothing special but for a budget hotel
it was pretty good with as much coffee as we wanted.
Its was about 5 minutes walk from the sky train and there was plenty of hawker food around the place.
Aircon was a bit noisy but then when isn't it.
I would rate this hotel as a best buy budget hotel and would stay there again with no hesitation.

The First Hotel Prattunam- Book through Agoda.com
This hotel has decent rooms, cable, 2 pools, & best of all in the best location. Right across the road is prattunam fasion mall & pantip Plaza ( Computer equip , Camera's, Cd's, Dvd's.)As you exit the hotel to the left hand side the markets basically start smack bang there. Open 9-8pm Hawkers line the streets and there are verious local restaurants to choose from. If you exit the hotel to the right and walk about 300m your at the sky train . I think its 2 stops and your at mbk.

Moreover, the room was clean, comfort bedding and value money !!! Aslo, you can go to shooping mall like prautunam plaza, platinum plaza, pantip and central world plaza......

Try to check and enjoy your trip !!!

Travel Tips for Bangkok

There are a vareity of beggar...

by LAOWAI

There are a vareity of beggar sorts in Bangkok. You've got the blind singers, wandering naked kids, one-legged ones, one-armed ones, and perfectly normal guys with dogs (see photos). I can't say it was a fond memory, but it was weird. Yesterday I saw this guy beggin with his dog. That was odd, but the sick part was that he was banking some serious coinage while a one-legged, obviously super-poor, guy 5 meters away wasn't getting anything.

China Town

by vigi

A few streets down HuaLamPong is Bangkok's Chinatown. This is an old business center covering a large area. There are many alleys that are full of shops selling all types of merchandise. It has been the main center for trading by the Chinese since they were moved from their old site some 200 years ago. Although many staff in Chinese restaurant speaks Chinese, most residents there, while they might claim Chinese ancestry, speak only Thai and think of themselves as Thai. China town is a places for good and cheap Chinese food: Seafood, Charks Fin, and Birds Nest.

take care; be aware

by iaint

Monks are not allowed to have any physical contact with women, so visiting women need to be aware. In most situations its unlikely to arise, unless in a crowd for example.
The other situation I've come across is on the plane, when a monk was seated next to me. Most times the male member of the cabin crew attended to him, but once when it was a female, I had to take his drink from her and pass it to him.
Normally the airline would not seat a monk beside a female passenger, but if something were to go wrong, the monk or the female would be allocated a new seat when on board.

Don't aim your feet at people-...

by LAOWAI

Don't aim your feet at people- THEY HATE IT. It's the dirtiest part of your body and it's BAD. I mean- the bottom of your feet. Don't worry about pointing the direction of your feet- no one, not even Thais, can not point their feet toward others.

Cycling through Thailand countryside

by biketour

Countryside cycling which is inexpensive, this trip involves a brief (1 hour) local train trip to get us to a more remote cycling area. Immersion to the Thai countryside way of life is great, you will meet the local farmer and fisherman, eat local food and fruits (especially fresh coconut from the farm), and being in local school with the school children was fantastic experiences I ever had. While visiting, we and schoolchildren were dancing and singing a song in local settings. This was my best memory of lifetimes.
