Cost of Taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Shangri La Hotel Bangkok

by 2Bibbie

I am comparing costs at the moment: cost of a taxi from the airport to the hotel at 89 Soi Wat Suan Plu New Road, Bangrak, Bangkok
compared to the THB2,600 (currently $AUD89)that the hotel charges for a pick up at the airport. I am not arriving in the middle of the night so really don't need the security of a private pickup. Any guestimates on the cost of a taxi from the airport to the Shangri La?

It is less than 20 USD, much better than hotel pick up that charge 4 times that amount. Shangri La is a nice hotel and all their services are first class, but you pay for it. Taking the taxi into the city is easy with the address in hand. Cheers Tommy x

Meter taxi from the airport usually comes to around 350 baht to most places in Bangkok. This includes the mandatory 50 baht surcharge, toll charges plus the meter fare to the hotel. Meter starts at 35 baht. Lots of posts on meter taxis in Bangkok. In general, if you pay the meter and DO NOT bargain the fare the price is cheaper! Meter taxis in the city do not charge any surcharge, that is only FROM the airport and not to the airport. The meter fare covers EVERYONE in your taxi not per passenger!

For the meter taxi from airport the sign-up desks are located off of first floor in 2 spots, at curb area. Have a good address to give to the Public Taxi desk clerk. They will tell the driver where to go to. You get a receipt, keep it! Receipt identifies the taxi and tells you who to complain to if you have a problem. Paying the toll charges during the ride is normal, pay surcharge plus meter fare at hotel. Have small bills for paying the driver. Don't over tip!

Hint - when you want to take a taxi from your hotel, walk away from the front a bit and wave a MOVING taxi down and tell the driver to use the meter. Parked taxis, in front of expensive hotels, often want to bargain the fare and you pay more!

An easier way to save money is to choose a different hotel. With the new Airport Rail Link up and running, there are hotels you can walk to from this rail link. Right now the price is only 15 baht for the ride to the Pratunam area. One place is the Baiyoke Boutique Hotel.

Basic hotel with air, hot water, private toilet, cable TV and maid service start around 600 baht. A hotel in the 1000 baht range - 1400 baht range is not that bad.

Good luck..

There's Taxi desks at the airport. buy a voucher for around 500THB, give it to the driver and that's it. There's plenty of taxis but prices vary, this is a fixed price trip with no hassling. I've used the hotel transfer before and am happy with it, expensive, but you're staying at a nice hotel. Goes with the territory.

Travel Tips for Bangkok

Movie..

by yuet29

It was quite ean ye-opening to watch movie in Bangkok. I was watching this movie called 'the sin 2' in MBK's cinema. Initially I thought it is an unpopular english movie, but then discovered it is a thai movie.

It was an R21 rated-movie where many naked part are shown. However, the cinema allowed people from different ages- i saw kids and teenagers below 18 watching this movie. Hmm.. are the movies in Thailand cinema being categorized into different category??..

For those who interested, the movie tix in Bangkok is 120B, which is actually more expensive than malaysia..

Visa for Myanmar in Bangkok

by lotharscheer

At the moment travel agencies in Bangkok dont do the Myanmar visa, but
you can get a tourist visa at the Embassy of Myanmar in 2 working days for 810 Baht, express visa on the same day for 200 more.
You need 2 pictures with white background ! and a copy of your passport.
Entrance for visa is at Thanon Pan near Sathon Nuea.
There is a copy and picture shop (a bit more expensive) a 50 meter towards Silom oad.
Get there with bus nr. 15 from Khao San, or with skytrain from Sukhumvit.

Te floating markets

by Bjorgvin

Visit the floating markets. Bangkok is sometimes called the 'Venice of the East' for its network of canals (Klongs) on the Chao Phraya River. For a long time the residents of Bangkok have been communicating by small boats on the canals, not unlike Venice. The merchants of Bangkok take their fresh products (such as flowers, fruits etc.) by boat each day to the so-called floating markets for trading. At a floating market one will find all kinds of 'shops' and food stalls.

We Use A Spoon...

by Arjaree

...to eat rice, noodles, pasta, soup, anything and everything. Spoon plays a significant role in our Thai table manners. While Americans and Europeans use fork and Chineses use chopsticks, Thais use spoon. (though many use chopsticks for noodles)

However, its not a big deal. Just use whatever you feel comfortable with. Cos when it comes to eating, you should just enjoy it!

But don't eat like a pig..............And since you're not in Japan or China, try not to make noise when eating or sipping a soup. Thais don't think that is a way to compliment the food. Period.

Bring an Empty Bag!

by maxamilion

If you plan on coming to Bangkok, please bring as few items as you possibly can. I can't stress this enough! Bangkok is a shopper's heaven and even if you don't enjoy shopping you will still find yourself filling up your bag with goodies that you have purchased.

I've done many trips to Bangkok and i always take almost no clothes with me. You can buy them so cheap over in Bangkok that you shouldn't waste your time and energy lugging them all the way from home and then finding out you have to leave half of them in Bangkok, because you no longer want them!
