Advice for transport to/from Ayutthaya

by stamporama

I read that one could either ride the train or minibus to Ayutthaya, though I understand that the minibus can get there faster assuming there's no traffic. So if I plan to leave between 7-8 AM, will the minibus be the better option? And how about if I wish to be back in the city by early afternoon, will the train be faster so as to avoid the traffic?

Thanks for any replies.

You can also sign up for a tour through local travel agencies. Tour company picks you up at your hotel, take you around the various places, drives you safely back to your hotel. Lots of travel agencies have this tour on their list. Find the nearest travel agency and see the fee fits your budget.

With an organized tour, you will be in passenger vans with other tourists. You get to meet other people (or not.) I usually bring a paperback book to read on these things. Bring your own TP with you, facilities often do not have TP.

"Sometimes the cheap comes expensive!" Thailand has 2 tier pricing for entering some places. With a tour, that company pay the cheaper Thai price, tourists by themselves pay a higher foreigner (Farang) price.

Good luck.

I took a bus from the northern bus terminal and traffic was ok in the morning. Train is quite slow with many stops and may not necessarily have seats. I was standing for almost the entire trip! But it's still a nice way to see the scenery along the route.

We just came back with a group of friends (13 of us) traveling together.
I organized a tour through a local VT member who is a professional tour guide and she took us to Ayutthaya.
We very much enjoyed the quicker ride in the mini bus but, we had it all to ourselves as we were a group unto ourselves.
Having said that, we preferred the train.
There is something about the local flavor, riding with the locals, seeing people get on and off the train, often with livestock or the numerous vendors with food who hop on and off the train that cannot be compared to the more standard bus ride.
Once there, we hired a tuk tuk to be our guides/drivers to the various temples and took the train back following morning.
We loved that experience.
My 2 cents worth.

Meant to add, by bus, we left at 8:00am, saw approximately 6 temples/sites and we were back by about 5:00pm.
We didn't feel as if we got enough but cannot see making the trip for less either.

Yes, we took a mini bus to Ayutthaya from Bangkok for our group of 13.
You can get a mini van/bus for as few as 8 people.

Travel Tips for Bangkok

I love 7-11 in Bangkok

by ahcoln

Bangkok is all time hot & humid, even at night. Walking in about 5 minutes always make me sweat and feel thirsty. But the lovely part of Bangkok is there are many 7-11 in the city. You can normally spot one within five minutes walking distance. There were three outside the hotel I stayed, and I visit it more than frequent. Unlike in my country where the goods sold in 7-11 always more expensive than other, the 7-11 in Bangkok offers a very competitive price. I bought a lot of drinks & snacks food/
