Airport to Pratunam area : MRT or TAXI
by utchie
How much to take taxi from airport to Pratunam area, and how much is the current toll rate?
I was very enthusiastic when I found out that the Airport rail transit has a direct stop at the station in front of our Hotel, but was surprised to find out from the website that it costs 150B per head. Which will make it 600B for the four of us.
I was in Bangkok 2009 and we took a taxi to our place, also in Pratunam. If I remember correctly, we paid 350 to 400 including toll fees. Which will make taxi ride a cheaper and more convenient choice for us. Unless the taxi fare has become more expensive.

150 Baht is the express train, you can take the local service for a fraction of that. For the 4 of you, you can fit in one taxi if you don't have a lot of luggage.

I took the Express train from Makkasan (City Air Terminal) to the Airport and it cost THB100 per person. Makkasan is the only stop for the express service.
Regular train from Airport does stop at 2 other statons after Makkasan (City Air Terminal).

The Rail Link has 2 trains, the Express is 150 baht but the ordinary City line is only 45 baht per person to the final stop. There are 3 stops in the Pratunam area. Makassan is where the express ends at. The City Line also goes to Ratchaprorop and Phaya Thai.

An ordinary meter taxi in Bangkok is around the size of a Toyota Carolla or Nissan Sentra. These taxis also usually have a natural gas tank taking up some of the room in the trunk. You know how big you guys are - can all 4 of you fit in one taxi plus luggage? Four times 45 baht (Pratunam area) with the rail link is 180 baht. Time difference to Makassan between trains is around 10 minutes. Only the City Line goes to the final 2 stops. Beware the midnight closing time for the Rail Link!
Up to you.

Thanks everyone. :)
If the city link is 45B each, then we will definitely take it as the stop Ratchaprorop is very near PR Place, right SirHalberd?

You can see the hotel from the rail link. Straight shot up the road. You will be heading towards Phetchaburi Road.

"This machine has an automatic changing and receipt system. Token can be easily purchase by merely selecting the destination station. The machine will calculate the fair according to the distance. City Line’s fair start from 15 baht up to 45 baht, while Express’s fair is a flat rate of 150 baht."
(Their spelling errors.)
BE AWARE OF THE CLOSING TIME!
SA City Line has 5 trains, each train has 3 passenger cars with the capacity of 745 passengers per train. It provides service from 06.00 to 24.00 everyday.

Travel Tips for Bangkok
The People

Good advice from Curt1591.
Haggle with street vendors but don't argue.
If a situation develops, escape as quickly as possible.
And remember that to the Thais, 'face' is VERY important. NEVER insult or slight their character, even jokingly.
They are beautiful people, treat them as such and you will have a wonderful stay.
And for transport, if you are brave, the motorcycle taxis are really exciting - and also quite safe. I miss the food and the lifestyle.
Sitting out at a roadside 'cafe' in Bangkok, eating noodles and soup, people watching until the sun comes up.

Songkran
by Blatherwick
Songkran is the Thai New Year's festival. It is celebrated on the first after the first new moon of April. Everything shuts down for the Songkran festival and then a country wide water fight emerges. Make sure that anything electronic is put in a plastic bag because you are going to get soaked. People roam the streets with bowls of water, water guns or even a garden hose, and drench each other and passersbys. Some even mix colored powder into the water. As a tourist, you are a target for sure. Khaosan Road is particularly crazy and is a must see for this time. The festival lasts officially for 3 days in the Bangkok area.
This tradition originated in the lustration ceremony, in which the Buddha images in the temples are cleaned. In many cities, such as Chiang Mai, the Buddha statues from all of the wats in the city are paraded through the streets, so that people can throw water on them as they pass. The use of plaster is also very common having originated in the plaster used by monks to mark blessings.
Other traditional elements of the festival include young people visiting elders, and pouring small amounts of lustral water on the hands of their elders as a sign of respect. People carry handfuls of sand to their temple in order to make up for the dirt that they carry away on their feet during the rest of the year. The sand is then piled into large, tiered sand castles and decorated with colorful flags. In general, Songkran is a time for cleaning and renewal. Many Thais take this opportunity to give their home a thorough cleaning.
All over Bangkok there is...
by monica78
All over Bangkok there is Buddha statues. People come here with flowers, food and other things that they like to offer to the Buddha. They do this because they have prayed for something and they have got it. So these offers are a thank to the Buddha for the help.
Do respect people doing their prayers...
