private guide

by rosanefoto

Hi There im going to bkk in november and i want about a good private guide that speak english or portuguese to walk with us and visit same places.

Re: private guide

Google up Tong Tours and there will be lots of info on that private tour company.

http://www.tourwithtong.com/

Ordinary (cheaper, small group tours) can be obtained through local travel agencies and even some hotels. Lots and lots of travel agencies with a menu selection of tours to choose from. Pick an evening tour or dinner cruise in the morning and probably be on it that same night. Choose a tour the day before and leave the following morning. Tour companies pick you up at your hotel and return you there at the end of the trip.

Up to you if you go with a private tour or with a small group (usually a van load) of tourists like you who are new to Thailand.

Good luck.

I was offered a "free" half-day tour by a iarport travel agent (when booking the hotel on arrival). I did the tour and was very happy with the knowledgeable young lady guide, giving me a lot of insight of the harsh realities for most of the local Thais. As expected, the tour also included a couple of "commercial" visits (a tailor and a jewelery shop), after the guide asked for my acceptance (butof no particular interest to me).
I made sure that both the guide and the liumo driver did not do the effort "for free". Still, I had a great day and will do a similar tour again. By paying it to guide and driver, I make sure that the cash goes to those who merit it.

Private tour guides have the advantage of no shopping and custom itineraries.

Here's a list of guides:

Travel Tips for Bangkok

Holy Flying Longtails, Batman!

by Pat&ZoAnn

The trip to the floating market included a ride in a longtail boat. The boats picked up the tourists at a parking lot, and made a number of return tips. The canals were not very wide, and the empty boats returning to the parking lot tried to swamp the out going boats with the tourists. Made for a good picture, although soggy.

Departure Tax

by Unknownsu

All international flight passengers are required to pay a service charge and VAD (value added tax) prior to boarding your plane which comes to 500 Baht. So when you're leaving Bkk, make sure you keep an additional 500 in your pocket.

Tour guides in Bangkok

by bulldogtwo

I would agree, equally with both of the last posters.
Tour agencies are everywhere with tour guides that can take you as a group or by yourselves depending on how much you may want to spend. I agree with Halberd that you can always meet some interesting and nice people, and get ideas from people in a group about different places to see that you may not have thought about.
Personally I like to do things on my own and again, I agree with the last poster, Bangkok is easy. There are so many Thai web sites out there and ideas as to what to do that you should not have any problem with what to do. You may have issues with "time frame." How much time it takes to do something. Many people want to cram too much in instead of slowing down to enjoy the trip. Take your time, enjoy each place you go to see. Transpo is easy as well in Bangkok so getting to and from a venue is easy.
If you're looking for ideas as to what to do and see let us know and someone is sure to help you out here, or e-mail me.
Have fun and enjoy

Poodle Bushes?

by thedouglas

It is said that these coiffed little bushes and trees started off as an effort to copy Japanese bonsais, which the Chinese also replicated and individualised. You will see these little pom pom trees everywhere in Bangkok! They are called mai dut - and may be 5 inches or a few metres high. They are often seen at temples, and the Grand Palace has many, and typically grow or display in a face-gaining context - such as in a courtyard, entry, office, shopfront etc. where they will be on display. Some of them move away from the pom pom poodle appearance into forms of animals as well.

They are very beautiful and quite unique in appearance, and I took great interest in them on my first and subsequent visits.
