I have stayed at another Shangri-la in Singapore (Sentosa Island) which was an excellent experience so I was expecting same level of experience. US$210 a night is a luxury price for a place like Bangkok. The only good thing about this hotel is that it is close to both the river and the skytrain station. Other than that, it was not impressive at all (for that class of hotel). The room was small and old. This place needs a face lift. The swimming pool was small and crowded. Breakfast was not included for that price (I booked via Expedia). Hotel staff does not speak very good English (not much better than $50 hotel I stayed later).
TIPS: I have been told that if you book this hotels through travel agents in Asia (like Singapore and Hong Kong) you get better price (~150US$).
Unique Quality: The only "luxury" hotel next to the river and the sky train station.
I visit Bangkok twice a year since the last 15 years. I have stayed at all of the 5 star hotels on the river, and the Marriott Shagri-La is NOT a 5 star hotel. I would not give it more then 4 stars.
The pool is very small, and since the hotel is kid friendly, its packed with kids.
The rooms are very overpriced for the size and quality. If you want to get your monies worth of a 5 star, stay at the Peninsula or the Oriental. I enjoy staying on the river, it seems a little cooler then downtown Bangkok. The day spa has a great service, but the prices are outrageous. Body scrub and facial $240, good price for the states, but Thailand? If your going to pay this price, go to the spa at the Oriental
Unique Quality: The staff and house keeping is great! Trader Vics is always great!
In many cities throughout Asia, the ShangriLa is a luxury hotel worth the stay. However, in Bangkok, it pales in comparison to the Peninsula, The Oriental or the Sukathai. If luxury is your aim, don't stay here. This is not to say that the food, service or accommodation are bad just that you can get the same price at better luxury hotels.
Superb hotel, it will celebrate it's 20 years in 2006.
I stay 2 nights in a room with pool view in the 25st floor in the main building, the krungthep wing is more luxury. The view was superb. The room are not very large but offer everything. really good service they bring chocolate for our baby.Wonderful pool and boats bringing you around. This hotel was designed by interdesign, a group of architect that buid also the Sofitel Central Plaza, the Novotel Siam square and the Amari Orchid resort in Pattaya.
Unique Quality: Superb pool, great service, large choice of restaurant
Directions: On the river in the end of Silom road left
A five star hotel with a superb view. Located on the banks of the Chao Praha the lively Bangkok river. Ideal to use the water taxi to explore Bangkoks tourist attractions.
The excellent breakfast can be enjoyed on the terrace next to the buzzling river.
The view over the River is one of the major advantages of the Shangri-La.
1. Main Wing, Executive suite:
Spacious with separate living entry, living room and bedroom. Decor is more of a general "exotic" or "oriental" flair rather than thai. Just my impression, I'm not at all an expert. Furniture style somewhat dated.
Immaculately clean. Very nice river view although not directly facing the river.
2. Krungthep wing: (normal room)
Great frontal river view. Nice little balcony. Friendlier and more inviting feeling than in the Shangri-La wing.
More private and luxurious all the way from the lobby without hustle bustle of the main wing to breakfast in the krungthep wing.
Krungthep wing swimming pool was a disappointment. Firstly, it's rather narrow and just plain square. Secondly, it's very often in the shadow of the hotel. Thirdly, it was blocked two days for a chinese water ballet. This blocking for special occasions or even private parties seems to happen often.
Main swimming pool is a real delight. Very close to the river and still with that tropical feeling between the swaying palmtrees at sunset. Great, just too bad all the guests know that and it does get a little crowded in the evening.
Location is good: Close to the river for a nice view and also next to sky train station. (Adjacant to Krungthep wing, otherwise 5 mintues additional walk thru the hotel).
Shopping (Robinsons, grocery etc) around the block. (5-10 minutes walk)
Service: Very good and unobstrusive.
Restaurants: Mainly ate breakfast only. For the rest, I find the prices a bit high. The competition is so huge in Bangkok and prices and quality at local restaurants are hard to beat.
Unique Quality: Beautiful pool by the river.
Nice river view from rooms.
Krungthep wing next to skytrain.
Directions: By the river
The Shangri-La is one of the finest hotels i've ever had the pleasure to stay at. It's located on the riverbank of the Chao Phraya, close to the sky train station and the riverboat jetty. Rooms are spacious, luxurious with marble bathrooms, walk-in showers and a river-view balcony. The service is impeccable and the breakfast buffet satisfies even the most demanding gourmet.
There are several fantastic, but very pricy restaurants on the compound, as well as 24-hour room service and limousine service.
Unique Quality: If you stay longer than three nights you often get upgraded to the more luxurious Krung Thep Wing.
We stayed in an Horizon Club room due to getting many, many upgrades in a way I am not sure of! I am certainly not complaining as it was truly a wonderful experience. Our room was well laid out and quite spacious and had a full length window over the river. I simply cannot fault it. The bathroom was superb.
The hotel has all of the facilities you could want and more besides. Conveniently located near to a Skytrain station and also a riverboat pier. Both are within a few minutes walk and give access to the rest of the city and the major attractions very comfortably.
Service is always available from well trained, knowledgeable staff. Food and drink is well presented if a little expensive. The outdoor buffet/restaurant was excellent as were the breakfasts.
Unique Quality: The swimming pool is huge and well maintained. Plenty of towels and food and drink available without having to move from your lounger.
Riverview rooms give a never ending sight of the entertaining river.
We had a very pleasant stay at the Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok. Our room was on one of the upper floors and it looked out over the Chao Phraya River and a main road--the views were amazing at night! I enjoyed lounging by the pool and watching the traffic pass by on the river. Also, conveniently, there is a riverboat dock located at the hotel. I was very happy with the service and amenities. The high-ceiling lobby is a nice place to relax. One day there was a Guy Laroche fashion show going on there. I also loved all the orchids and tropical plants throughout the hotel. All in all, a very luxurious place to stay in a fast-paced city.
Unique Quality: We spent a happy hour after lunch sipping coffee and playing backgammon at a table next to the pool. We enjoyed "playing rich" -- and put this hotel on our list for a splurge if we get back here!
We just ate here, but it was clear from walking through the front door and the lobby to the cafe on the river that this was a beautiful and discreetly run hotel.
Unique Quality: This picture is of the very modern lobby with stunning views of the river. The green items are stunning glass sculptures.
Well I've never stayed here I just liked the way it looked from the outside so I took a picture. It is right on the river and the upper floors would give you some fantastic views. All amentities that you high-end people like will be available here. I'm a cheap traveller so you wouldn't find me here. Rooms start at around $200 but I'm sure if you book on-line you can get that price down a bit.
Unique Quality: All of the pleasures of home and then some!! You probably won't see any cockroaches here! LOL
Directions: It is near the Taksin Bridge
On the banks of the Chao Phraya, the Shangri-La hotel is an oasis after touring Bangkok during the day.
Included breakfast buffet was delicious, daily selection included pancakes, french toast, bacon, sausage, fruit, pastries, made to order eggs/omelets, stir fry, fried rice, miso soup, curry dish, cereal, tea, coffee, juices. Guests could eat inside or out on the terrace overlooking the river.
I think we were in one of the lower class rooms so the amentities should be greater if you pay more Baht. King size bed with goose down pillows and comforter, room was spacious, our bathroom had a separate shower and bathtub. But I thought the coolest feature was a nightlight button next to the bed that lights up just enough to see the way to the bathroom but not bright enough to wake others.
Conveniently located near the Skytrain and near a river ferry pier, also has a free ferry to River City every 1/2 hour.
For a better price, try booking through www.asiahotels.com, www.circleofasia.com, www.asiatravel.com. We used www.tiglion.com for an airfare/hotel package from Hong Kong.
Unique Quality: Good views of the river from most rooms, 2 pools, jacuzzi, full exercise facilities, several restaurants, attentive staff, complimentary fruit basket and bottled water, nice selection of toiletries. Could have done without the digital scale in the bathroom telling me that I was gaining weight every day!
A private BUTTLER was at our service. Huge complimentary tropical welcome drinks were offered while the check-in registration process took place IN THE ROOM!
...everything was *thai-silk*! The curtains, bed-covers and on walls silk-paintings.
ONCE IN MY LIFE I wanted to try what's it like to stay in one of the top 10 leading hotels of the World. Shangri-La is situated on the banks of the historic Chao Phraya River and each deluxe guestroom and suite enjoys spectacular river views.

Hi has anyone stayed at the Shangri La hotel, if so can you tell me what you thought of your stay. Many Thanks.
it is one of the best hotels in BKK. The food is great. Also there is a shop outside the hotel that sels very good copies of copy watches. find NICK's shop...
the shangri la is a fine place to stay but dont rule out the dusit thani branch of hotels , also well worth looking at .
if you can afford this class of hotel, you dont need copy watches, you already own the real thing....any of the river front hotels in this area are fine, all depends on the deal you get or which frequent stay program you are best ranked in....
Hi Have dined at its restaurant several times and it is top class, we walked through the grounds and past the beautiful swimming pool by the river. This is a 5 star hotel, one of the best hotels located on the Chayo Praya river and very close to a Skytrain Station.
it is very comfortable, great rooms, and views, attentive service, and wonderful location by the river
the mosquitoes by the pool are huge, the patio is quite noisy with all the long tail boats, its not convenient for shopping along sukhumvit because you have to go to siam square and change to go east, there is nothing of interest in the immediate vicinity, and it is not a very nice neighbourhood , and it is a long way from most of the sights, and worst of all, the price of food and drink is out of all proportion to the prices you will pay in bars and restaurants in town.
that said, very confortable.
