An oasis in the city

There are numerous,almost an uncountable number, of places to stay in Bangkok. And they run the gamut from expensive resorts to rat-infested hovels. So, finding a place that strikes a balance isimportant. And the best place to stay is, in this traveler's opinion, the Shanti Lodge. Tucked away in a little corner of Bangkok, it is within walking distance to Khaosan road as well as the Chao Praya river taxi system to help you get around the city. Yet, while it is close to these areas, it is blissfully quiet and peaceful. A great retreat within Bangkok.

The rooms range from small single rooms, which start at around $10 per night, up to suites for families (around $30-50 a night) or deluxe accommodations for around $100. So there is a place for any price range. The rooms are immaculate, and the grounds are kept up daily by the people who operate the lodge. The budget rooms are usually without shower, but there is a communal shower downstairs which is also very clean.

Attached to the lodge, downstairs, is a terrific restaurant. Chairs and couches with low lighting allow you to lounge around, with a menu of Thai dishes to spice and excite the tongue. Music plays softly. Additionally there are spa and massage services available, and they can help you book transportation or tours across the nation.

The staff are courteous, friendly, and helpful, willing to help make your stay wonderful. I first encountered Shanti Lodge on my first voyage to Thailand, and when I was going back last fall, I knew exactly where I wanted to stay.
