Travel Tips for Bangkok

Currency Exchange

by explore_discover

Bank's offer lesser rate then the private exchange compnies. I have found the Rainbow Exchange at Khosan Road offering better rates then anyone 32.20 Bhat for USD 1 (25 may 2010) (they only Buy - and do not sell and US$100-50 bills fetch little more then the smaller 10's and 20's while the Highest Rate offering by Bank 32.07 by kasikorn Bank

Location is the first shop on the right when you enter Khaosan Road there is a large/colorful Sign Board.

They also have another branch at Soi Rambutri right beside the Massage Home (same color sign board)

YOU MUST RIDE ON A TUK-TUK AT LEAST ONCE!

by ALSAGOFF

RIDE ON A TUK-TUK OF COURSE, AT BREAKNECK SPEED...A BONUS IF THE DRIVER IS CUTE! :)

Often the drivers will hang around every corner to hassle you to book them for whole-day trips. Often on the agenda includes temples, factories and then more temples and more factories.

But go with an open mind but of course, not being gullible too..we were just walking around Pratunam the next day we arrived and this guy, Punya (pronounced as Banja) approached us.

He looked honest and never pushed us and asked us instead to state the price. I think it was an ok deal - we paid 200 baht for the whole day visiting the Marble Temple, Thewet bridge to feed fishes and one factory just to help him out.

Apparrently, for every customer they bring in they get a coupon which they can exchange for 5litres of petrol/gas. Well actually diesel! Even if the person didn't buy. And if the person bought something then the driver would get 10 litres or even more depending on the amount spent.

I thought that was quite a brilliant plan but after a few times of 'helping' the drivers I got tired of it! :) There are only so many factories you can visit.

This is Punya's contact number in case you need his services: 0603-87052

Bee's

I've seen many lotus in around the palace last weeks visits and most in it are occupied with lot's of bee's...Most of the visitors took a photo of the lotus with the bee's in it too..and so with me and Syl! There are soo much to see in Grand Palace.

Religion in Thailand

Buddha - the relaxing one in the famous temple of Bangkok but all over the country you will find this admiration !
it is a local custom and tradition to buy some golden leafs and put it on the statues !

Health, Wealth and Fertility

by Bangkokjoe

...am trying to think of an appropriate way to describe this nobble of culture... errrrrm.

They are "lingams" - a symbollic phallus assocated with Shiva... and not only do they bring fertility (as is your first though) they are associated with bringing in money to businesses. Believe me when I tell you this lot is in a garden full of them in a five star hotel (The Nai Lert Park) round the back of my offices, on Witthayu Road, next to the British Embassy. Hundreds of the things, and a brass plaque in there giving you the details of what each group of nobs is there for.

Do not be surprised if you see a wooden phallus used as a paper weight in a shop. It is good for business. What you may see every morning, or as the business opens, is the owner tapping around the main entrances of the premises, and the cash register, on the staff's PCs, with the phallus; all in the spirit of bringing fortune into the place. Tap tap tap. Bangkok. (I'm giggling stage left - editor)
