Concerned after Sun 25Jul bomb, safe for kids?

by mcao1

We are arriving on Thursday 29 July and stay until Sun, our time will mainly be in the city. We've been to BKK for so many times but never at the height of any protests. As we are with 2 small kids so I'm wondering it's ok to move around, feared of incidents like bombing. Thanks so much fellow VTers

Saw a nasty crash yesterday also. I think I will stay home this week! (just for perspective)

There is no height of any protest at the moment. No one knows what, or who, was behind this bombing.

A single bomb can go off anywhere, anytime, anyplace there is nothing we can do about it. Bangkok is not a war zone, it is no different then any other city in the world.

At the moment this is a one off random bomb. I would not let this stop me taking my family(if I had one) to Bangkok but I would be a little more vigilante of course but I would also draw back on my pass experience and knowledge of Bangkok and still know Bangkok is still an ok city to go.

You proberly have more chance of getting knocked over at home then by a random bomb in another country.

We still do not even know whether this has anything to do with the previous protests or even political.
I wouldn't allow a minor incident like this to put me off from visiting a city. For my kids safety in Bangkok, I would be more concerned about them crossing roads etc...

Enjoy your trip in Thailand.

as the people who plant bombs are unlikely to post their plans on this site I'd say that it is a rather unanswerable question - look at other towns and countries, Spain US UK - would it stop you from going there?

frank bkk....its sad to see you think that a bomb is a minor incident??! coz its not! I`m fortunate enough to come from the South Pacific where this kind of thing never happens.

Life must go on in these countries though, and I wish that it can become a safe place for everyone soon...not just for the tourists.

A single bomb goes off at a bus stop downtown, and you fear moving around the city! Oh... come on, what are the chances of getting injured by a bomb blast? When a bomb goes off in London, or New York, do you fear moving around those cities for the next few weeks.
With two small kids coming along i would be much more concerned about their road safety!

mcao1: Once you get back from Bangkok, give us a little feedback on how things were there. Thanks

Travel Tips for Bangkok

River Cruise

by Audrey118

We stayed at the Marriott - by the river and they have a shuttle boat to transfer us from the hotel to Sathorn pier or another route to Oriental pier then to Rivercity....all this for free...so I guess even if you are not a hotel guest - you can actually travel on it as if you are - nobody is going to question you and it is rather a nice derstressing ride on the boat. There are of course organised river cruises with lunch or dinner or even cocktail drinks to watch the sunset etc. The Marriotts run the Manorha cruise which is an old converted rice barge - quite luxurious up and down the river. On this time of the year, and for the 4th successive year, there is a musical play The River of Kings held at the Ratchaworadit Pier

Grand Palace

by SirRichard

The Grand Palace is a must for any tourist in Bangkok. It's a huge area so reserve at least one whole morning for it: palaces, temples, gardens.... What impressed me most was the highly decorated buildings and the thousands of statues all around. Take a look at impressive Thai-style roofs...

Tickets for B200 (includes a ticket to Vimanmek Royal Mansion). Visitors must wear shoes, long pants / skirts (some ugly ones are available at entrance) and have the shoulders covered. Open daily from 8:30 to 15:30.

Muang Boran ~ Scripture Repository n Bell Tower

by Audrey118

The Scripture Repository and The Bell Tower

This repository houses the Tripitaka, the entire collection of Buddhist Scriptures, originally came from Wat Bang Yai at Bang Khonthi in Samut Songkhram province.

In ancient days the repositories rested on piles and stood in the middle of specially-constructed artificial ponds to protect the delicate palm-leaf manuscripts from white ants and other parasites.

This repository sits in the centre a pond.

The outside walls of the repository contain valuable old murals depicting the life of the Lord Buddha. Beside the Scripture Repository is the Bell Tower, obtained from the same monastery.

Songkran!

by aukjejetty

The craziest time in Bangkok has to be Songkran, the Thai New Year. It is going on for three days. You will not escape water or white stuff (some kind of dough) on your face and everywhere else.
Especialy when you are white you will have to take a lof of water and dough. I would advise to buy a good weapon (big watergun) and just defend yourself as well as you can!

Cotton clothes and sunblock

by ukirsari

Going around Bangkok, bring a comfortable backpack. And added with empty bag to bring the souvenirs :) Cotton shirts and cargo pants are necessary, because Thailand has hot climate. Then added with sandals or sneaker and hat. And you can bring a light raincoat too, for avoid bad weather accidentaly. Tissues and refreshing tissues, sunblock with SPF above 15, paracetamol and mineral water. Bring your receipt and copy of documents for preventive act and best results.
