Montien Hotel Bangkok

This hotel is located in the heart of Bangkok's major business and entertainment district, five minutes from the Mass Transit System station. The 475 guestrooms have satellite TV, direct-dial phones, and in-room safes. Guests can enjoy a cool drink beside the pool set amid the rooftop garden, or keep fit at the fitness center.

Unique Quality: ALthough an old hotel, still very good rooms, staff and food. Highly recommednded. Only very minor complaint is the very limited choices of TV channels. Unless your are British (BBC)...

perfect

I loved staying here the breakfast gives you a reason to wake up and the service is impeccable. It is right across the street from the night market and close to the skytrain

Unique Quality: the pool is nice and you have a great view of the city depending what floor your on.

Grows on you...

I checked in last Friday and immediately regretted it - they gave me a smoking room despite specifically requesting a non-smoking one, the decor reminded me of country hotels I stayed in with my parents in the North of England in the early 1980s, all dark stained wood panelling etc.

However the next day they changed my room with absolutely no fuss, and since then I have grown to like the place. The hotel may be a little antiquated, but the staff more than make up for it in their friendliness and efficiency.

The breakfast buffet is vast - Japanes, Thai, American, continental - loads of food to choose from. The only negative is that the ventilation in the breakfast room leaves a little to be desired, so your clothes tend to smell of cooking afterwards.

Unique Quality: The location is great for shopping and nightlife.

Very Thai

This hotel was in a great location - right opposite Patpong Markets. The hotel has very friendly staff and there is a helpful tourist desk in the downstairs lobby area. Taxis, tours and cars can be arranged with the staff here. There is a great pool on the lower outdoors areas when you need to cool off after a day exploring Bangkok.

Unique Quality: I loved the atmosphere of this hotel and the proximity to Patpong markets.

Don't be fooled by the Exterior

Updated: June 2007

This hotel is over 20 years old and the exterior of the hotel is rather grimy and unremarkable. However, the inside has been well maintained, the carpets look very new, the bronze stair railings are well polished.

The room we were given had been refurbished and looked new albeit a bit dated in terms of decor. Nevertheless, it was cosy and there was ample storage space (for all the additional shopping that I did!). The king-size bed was comfortable and firm enough, with clean white sheets. Air-conditioning was not too cold. There are several cable channels on TV as well as local TV channels.

The bathroom has been well-maintained, and comes with a full-size bath-tub and usual amenities.

Room came with hair dryer (which I had trouble finding at first-it was in the left drawer at the dressing table), two phones (bed side and in the bathroom), two bathrobes, nice Thai painting, and a balcony (but you can't walk out) that overlooks the elevated Rama IV highway.

Unique Quality: The location is excellent due to its proximity to food, shopping & nightlife. It is also convenient to get to other parts of Bangkok through the the BTS skytrain. (see above tip)
It has its own shopping plaza in the adjoining building and also the rather new Montien Plaza, right outside the hotel.

On the third floor you will find a fitness centre, sauna and a nice pool with green shrubs & a few deck chairs. I was really tempted to go for a dip, but with the limited time that I had in this city, sorry to say that I never got a chance to get wet...

Don't miss the remarkable Breakfast spreadThe buffet breakfast was definitely a highlight. The range was remarkable - with Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Western selection. The sauteed fresh local mushrooms was to "die for", not to mention the yummy hash brown potatoes, stir-fried soba noodles, siew mai tim sum, roast leg of pork, roast beef slices, freshly cut sweet pineapple, dragon fruit and juicy red watermelon, fresh plain yoghurt with fruit salad ~sigh~ heavenly and filling. I filled myself up and skipped lunch. (smile)

Good hotel in downtown Bangkok

The exterior of the hotel is unremarkable and rather old. (See pics in next tip). The lobby is warm and cosy, in classical Thai style, with gold highlights.

However, the room was comfortable and seems like it has been newly refurbished. We had a room at the North Wing (which I believe is newer).

Service was pretty good, especially the front counter staff and housekeeping staff.

Unique Quality: This hotel is in an excellent location. It is about a 5-minute walk from the Sala Daeng BTS Station on the Silom Line (change at Siam for Sukhimvit Line). It is also close to Silom MRT station and close to Bangkok Railway Station.

Best of all, situated as it is near the heart of Silom, the shopping and food stalls are all at your doorstep!

The nightlife district of Patpong (for better or worse-depending on your perspective...) is also right there at your doorstep.

OK for Basics

This is a basic place. I would say it's on par with a high end Motel 6. All the amenities you need are there but they are just ok, not great and certainly not luxurious.

I think we paid about $75 a night in 1999 including breakfast.

Also, be warned that its close proximity to Patpong means you may see some "vistors" coming through the hotel with one of the guests. If that bothers you, DON'T book here.

Having now been to Bangkok 3 times, I wouldn't pick this as my first choice but it's fine if push comes to shove and the price is right and the location is great.

Unique Quality: The location is WONDERFUL. That's the reason we booked it because it's right across from Patpong Market. And, having never been to Bangkok before, we figured if we got lost, it would be easy to tell the driver "Patpong" and he'd understand.

We were right. No matter what, we were always able to say "Patpong" and the driver knew exactly what we meant. No language problems on that count.

My "Home" when I visited Bangkok.

Ideally located in the heart of the city (just in front of Patpong area), The Montien Hotel, welcomes guests to the traditional Thai hospitality complemented by the excellence of luxury facilities. The parking area is closed by a Turistic Police Post and everyone must show the hotel pass before the entrance. Very safe place!

Unique Quality: Offering 475 rooms and suites, including Executive Floors with private lounge, meeting rooms and fully equipped business center. All Guest Rooms offer: multi channel radio, remote controlled satellite TV, video on request, IDD direct dial telephone, individually controlled air-conditioning, smoke detection safety system, personal electronic safe, private bathroom with bathtub and shower, hair dryer and others deluxe amenities. The official price is about 60 USD/night but when I was there I paid 25 USD/night. Maybe because I was in low season.

MONTIEN BANGKOK

by Leelee10

Anyone stayed here recently? Would be really interested to hear what you thought of the standard of room as well as service. Staying in a deluxe room and have seen mixed reviews which are a little dated now. Thanks in advance.

Friend of mine stayed last October. I found his room to be dated and musty with a leaky a/c unit. We had the buffet breakfast together and was just so-so. I stayed at the Swiss Lodge, just a short walk away from the Montien, and enjoyed that a bunch more. My friend said he would stay at the Swiss Lodge on his next trip.
Almost forgot...the Montiens service was nice and polite. Montien is an older hotel in need of a face-lift.
