A City OF Culture
by maxine24
Bangkok s people are friendly and there skill is unbelievable. From creating a suit to guilding gold onto there Grand Palace.
The shopping is FAB! The food great.
The Grand palace is a must to visit.
when we were we were lucky enough to see there royal family. There culture is amazing. Its worth a return visit. Feeding the Elephants in the Rose Gardens.
In fact the feeding was'nt intentional but they stole my packet of pizza flavour crisps.
Also riding on them. they are not what i expected. They have hair like needles very prickley. But very friendly.
Head for the islands!! ...

Head for the islands!! Bangkok is a city full of bustling activity both day and night........but to indulge in the richness and beauty that Thailand can really offer, I would recommend a trip to the beautiful outer islands of Thailand. I traveled towards the west coast of the country. From Bangkok, I hopped a flight to Phuket, took a taxi to the nearest port, and took the 1 hr 30 min. ferry ride to Phi Phi Island. My fondest memory of Bangkok........or Thailand......was my approach to the Phi Phi Islands at dusk. The torchlights were lit on the beach to welcome the incoming travelers. It gave me goose bumps just watching as we approached land.
It was an 'Aaron Spelling' moment......I was waiting for 'Mr. Rourke and Tatoo' to come out and welcome us to their Fantastic Island!
Veneration

The Thais are very religious. This is highly evident in the number of temples around the city and the number of people who actually come to pay their respects by burning incense and sticking that gold foil on the buddhas (never did ask why they do that).
Read about it before you go - get a good book
by thedouglas
I found a gem of a book at Bangkok Airport - at arguably the wrong end of the holiday - but buying it afterwards was great too, as I had lots of questions. Just felt the need to go back and understand a little better! - boy, that sounded confused didn't it?!
The book is called Very Thai - Everyday Popular Culture - put together by a pair of Americans, now living in Thailand - Philip Cornwel-Smith and John Goss (photographer). Published by River Books, Bangkok, 2005.
I found this to be an excellent book - very well photographed, capturing the abundant colour of Thailand, and the smiling people. The book is divided into chapters about the sights on the street, personal habits and beliefs, the wide array of rituals and sanuk - the fun part of Thai life.
All the answers are here about the things you see in the street and Thia lifestyle, which is both educational and amusing at times, but certainly enriches your appreciation of Bangkok and Thailand as a country. You can find out what all of those culinary delights you see in the street are, the "nick-name" culture, royal and Buddha reverence, how Thais love uniforms.......
Hair driers in Thailand
by gaolei
Many hotels in Asia have hair driers, don't bring your US one. It probably will not work. Look for the 110-230 VAC or 85-260 Vac label on your devices. It has to cover the range of 110 to 220Vac to be safe in Thailand or most of the rest of the world.
