Bangkok Boutique Hotel
Stayed at the Unico Grande Sukhumvit from 28 Sep to 1 Oct (3 nights). Nice, clean hotel, conveniently located opposite the back entrance of the famous Bumrungrad Hospital on Sukhumvit Soi 1. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Ploenchit Skytrain station and there are lots of little restaurants and convenience stores on the soi. The hotel itself has been newly renovated and indeed was still being renovated during our stay.
We stayed in a superior room which was bright, a good size, had a microwave, cutlery, large TV, DVD player and a good sized and comfortable bed and a nice bathroom. The staff were very polite and accomodating and the general decor of the place was welcoming and it was immaculate.
The drawbacks: The entrance to the hotel is not disabled friendly (like the rest of Bangkok!) and you have to climb a formidable flight of stairs to access the front entrance. The water pressure in the bathrooms was appaling and despite complaining about this, we were told tha the pressure was low because our rooms were on the 7th floor! As though that was supposed to make it all OK.
Despite the warning that renovation noise occurs between 9 to 5pm, there was considerable knocking audible at 730pm in my room and it was coming from directly above us. The fitness room was small with only one treadmill and the pool was the size of a very large bath, something you would see on the deck of a cruise liner. No laps I'm afraid. There was no DVD library despite advertising that DVD's were available for loan.
However, it was value for money and the friendly staff and good efficient service made up for the drawbacks. Overall, I would recommend it, but not for elderly or the disabled.
