Modern, air conditioned, spacious marble foyer with comfortable chairs and friendly staff greet you on first instance, although reception could be a little more efficient. Rooms can vary apparently, but rooms on 5th floor were spacious, functional and clean. You can open windows, although humidity and street noise may prevent you doing so! A/c units are old and somewhat noisy. Had the slightly odd experience of having to take a shower with my head at an angle - ceiling of the bathroom when standing in the bath is somewhat low! Breakfasts are fine - buffet style with European, Thai and Japanese breakfasts on offer, even if the breakfast room is somewhat clinical and anodine. Same can be said about the Rosirin Bar and Restaurant - doesn't look the place you would want to spend time in it, even if the food is good. One huge plus for the Viengtai hotel in this area is the very pleasant swimming pool, found in the courtyard off 3 rd Floor - very welcome place to head for after the humidity of the city. Surrounds are a little too European for my tastes - more fried eggs and bacon than rice and noodles, and only 100 metres from the Khoa San Road - but even so, great location, comfortable, functional hotel, very 'easy' place to stay - and that swimming pool is an enormous bonus.
Location is crucial when staying in Bangkok - my preference being near to the old city rather than the modern hotel blocks of Pat Pong. Viengtai certainly fits the bill is this quarter, with the Royal Palace and Wat Pho being a 10 minute walk away. Book through asiarooms.com - cheapest I found on the net. by joleson Great staff, awesome location, less than $20 US a day! including breakfast! I was absolutely impressed by my stay and would stay there again. It was very close to Khao San Road where there were great shops and a road that was closed off for walking. The room was small, I had a TV, and good breakfast. I ate food on the streets and anywhere it smelled good. I was there for 2 days, the help spoke great english and I didn't have a problem getting a Tuk Tuk or Taxi or transportation to the airport. It was a pretty good distance to the airport, but was in the heart of where I wanted to be, which is by all the gold buddah temples (Wats). I used sawadee.com to reserve the room. I did look around on expedia and other places and decided to go with something with more local flavor and save on price. I'm glad I did in this case. I recommend it and would stay there again.

 | Viengtai Hotel: Right in the centre!

The Viengtai Hotel lies right in the centre of Bangkok, the place for backpackers, with small streets, restaurants, lots of activity, live performances, lots of shops, it is FUN!!! The hotel is okay, the breakfast is fine, and there is a cafe with nice drinks... so a real good place to stay, we stayed here two nights in the beginning of our holiday and one night at the end. They have a storage room for your luggage if your flight leaves late at night. Their taxiservice is quite expensive, if you go on the street you will find a taxi that brings you to the airport for a lot cheaper!!
The hotel has a swimming pool, but it is not that nicely situated, but sure is refreshing with the high temperatures in Bangkok!
