We trained down from BKK, but could not get a room at the Hilton (on the beach and $150 a night). Apparently, the weekends are booked with up-scale Thais coming down from BKK. No matter, we tried the City Beach (not on the beach), and found it clean, and reasonably priced. Nice restaurant, good walking access to shopping, tourist markets, the beach, entertainment areas, and if you desire, the train station. (Speaking of trains, the Sunday north-bounds has reserved seats. Try to buy your reserved seat return tickets as soon as you arrive if you're there for the weekend. They DO sell fast. Since we couldn't get a seat on the train going back, we taxied to Bangkok. Train to Hua Hin - about $6 - take the local, it's far more interesting. Taxi home to BKK, about $45 for 3 people. There's a world of stuff to see and stop at on the highway going north. That could be a road-trip in itself.) There's a disco adjacent for the younger crew, just avoid getting a room over or near it. Very large Buddhist temple just next door, and if you get a northerly view room, you see the temple, cityscape and the ocean. We paid about $45 a night and it was a bargain. OK to walk if you are traveling light.
