Bangkok to Kanchanaburi

by jt01

What is the best way to do this trip. We are staying in the Siam Square area Bangkok and are planning to spend a couple of nights at River Kwai. If by train or bus are the stations in the Siam Square area. Thanks John

The train to Kanchanaburi is a great idea... it is a slow-moving, 3rd-class only train (the cost when I went was 25Bhat... can't beat that), with open windows and wooden seats. It does not leave from Hualamphong, however... you have to go across the river to the Thonburi station. A short taxi ride will get you there.

Another option would be to take the sky train to the stop for the Chatuchak Weekend Market (I think 2nd from last stop on the northern tip). From there, it's a 15 minute walk to the bus station or you could take a tuk-tuk. It's going to be more convenient to get to this than the train station. Trains are always more comfortable than buses, but it's not that long of a ride.

Travel Tips for Kanchanaburi

Shy School Kids

by herzog63

It seemed to me that most of the young kids want to speak to the Farang but some are just to shy to start the conversation. But once the conversation is going they seem to have fun!! The young ones don't know a whole lot of English but if you learn a phrase or two of Thai it can be fun!!
All of the schools in Thailand have school uniform like the one being worn in the picture.

The JEATH War Museum is located on the grounds of this large temple complex. There's a huge statue of a horse pulling some kind of chariot along in the middle of the buildings plus there's the remains of an old temple building opposite this statue.

Travel within Kanchanaburi

Not many meter taxis in Kanch, a few rickshaws around the touristy areas and songthaews wait at the bus terminals, mainly motorcycle taxis. All charge about half the price in BKK. (20bht to most guest houses in Kanch) Buses run frequently round town and you can travel to the popular attractions easily for 50-60bht.

River Kwai sightseeing

World War 2 monument (bridge on river Kwai) is worth seeing if you are interested in WW2 issues. Bridge is located few kilometers from downtown Kanchanaburi so it is wise to rent motorbike or go by bus. We do not recommend walking (as we did), especially at lunchtime ;-)

The One day trip out of town is fantastic! For 650Baht(£10), you get to go to Erawan falls, which are a serious of waterfalls on 7 levels whcih are stunning. You also go on a bamboo raft down the peaceful river kwai with stunning scenery. You get to ride an elephant through the jungle. You visit an elephant sanctuary and finally you get to ride on the death railway train through more scenery before being dropped off at the bridge over the river! a fantastic day out includes lunch!

Also the markets in town are pretty good and you can pick up a bargain!
