Chitanun Guesthouse: Chitanun, central, but quiet
Kanchanaburi offers a wide range of accomodations and you will have no problems finding something that suits you. Initially we wanted to try Apples Guesthouse, but they were full, as was the Jolly Frog Backpackers.
So we found this Guesthouse here, also located at the Mae Nam (or Menam or Maenam) Kwae Road, where most accomodations (at least those for Backpackers) are.
The Chitanun Guesthouse has several double-Bungalows that are set back from the noisy street.
Some have air condition and hot water, others fan and only cold water.
Both kinds are clean and well kept, but nothing special.
At the road itself they have the reception and a small restaurant.

PONG PHEN GUESTHOUSE: KANCHANABURI
After checking out lots of accomodation options on the net I decided on Pong Phen. Good choice for the budget conscious traveller.
It's in a lane off River Kwai Rd. Lots of eating and drinking places nearby.
We stayed in a bungalow, the most expensive option. It cost us 900 THBT, about AU$30.
There are lots of rooms at varying prices, check out their website.
Our room was fine. Typical asian bathroom though, no curtain around the shower so everything gets wet. Not a problem unless you forget to take the toilet paper out first!!
The bed was very comfortable, but don't be surprised by no top sheet! I had to look twice! Instead you each have a very large towel (almost the size of a single bed sheet) to wrap yourself in. Actually I think I prefered it, at least we didn't disturb each other during the night!
Aircon works very well. Too cold for me at night.
The pool was nice but be careful of the tiles they are very slippery when wet.
Breakfast, which was adequate, was included in our price but I think it's extra if you're in a cheaper room.
We had an evening meal there as well, it was very nice.
Tours or transport can be arranged with the staff.
Staff are lovely. We would certainly stay here again if we go back to Kanchanaburi.

Nita's Raft House: Friendly, quiet family atmosphere
The guest house is run by a very nice couple, Booey and Thip. They live there with their daughter. It is right on the river, and sways gentley as it floats in the ripples.
I really enjoyed the friendliness, quiet home-like atmosphere, and wonderful home cooked meals.
Positive: atmosphere, views, quiet, peaceful, food, tourist infomation, English spoken well by owner, close to bus station and JEATH war museum and a nice wat, price (was 90 baht for single with fan)
Negative: Mattress was thin and hard, outhouse style bathroom outdoor sink. But there are some 'luxury' suites that have private bathroom, far from main strip of guesthouses and tour agencies, a little hard to find in the dark walking. Must get taxi on main road by tourist businesses, especially at night or will be walking in dark (:
Library of guidebooks, homemade tourist info. book, happy to answer questions and help book tours, phone, outlets for charging appliances, quiet, peaceful, on river

Ban Huay Ulong Resort: Near Thong Pha Phoom, 2 hrs north of Kanchanaburi
Great base for exploring national parks of the area (near Burmese border).
Offroad tours available by 4x4 (great fun & quite scary) and elephant, as well as trekking.
You can camp.
Bungalows on Ulong stream are gorgeous, food is good. You can paddle/splash in the stream to cool off.
Service can be a little slow but very friendly!
Joe, the owner from BKK, is great and likes to have fun!
The setting is gorgeous and mellow...so quiet, cows wandering down the stream, fire flies, the birds, water snakes, dragonflies, chickens!

River Rafftel: River Rafftel
A very unique lodging opportunity. Good food, some folk dances and oil lamps. Take a flashlight with you. It's easier to go bathroom if forgot your oil lamp outside or if you put it out.

Little Creek Hideaway Valley: Remote, Really remote (but hey ...)
This resort is really hidden away at a remote location, away from the town centre. But it provides free taxi shuttle service at various pick up points. However, to get to town for a meal or what, you can hire their motorbikes at 150 Baht per day. Petrol top-up is cheap too. Shown in the picture is their bungalow at 800 Baht per night. However, one bad point is, they have MANY lizards.
Hmm, when it comes to outstanding, i would say its location. It is really remote, and about 3 - 5km away from the town. SO please remeber the way (as in the landmarks and paths) when travelling to town, if not you can lose your way. Oh, for one, try not to go back at night, coz there is one stretch of road back that has NO lampposts. Totally no light! Your motorbike light will help, but the whole experience of travelling in pure darkness is FREAKY. And some dog will suddenly emerge from the bushes and chase after your bike, but, you cant see half a thing! Challenging, but freaky. *shudder*

The picture shown is not the GH i stayed. The floating GH I stayed called Big Mama's GH, is very ulu located in rural area. No other houses nearby. The GH is run by a lady with her two kids. The room and the shared toilet both cannot lock. No electricity except oil lamps. No tourist other than a group of us joined the tour. There are lots of mosquitoes in the evening. Mosquitoes net is provided but amazingly there are no mosquitoes at night. The morning on the river is foggy and chilly. A lot of cats around. Make sure you anyhow make your door closed at night or you will find cat sleepng with you. Thats what happened to 2 Denish traveled together.
Everthing in my above description dont sound good, but I like that place. Where can you find a GH beside river and in the jungle?

Sugarcane guesthouse 2: Well facilitated guesthouse!
We stayed 4 nights here. 200Baht for a bamboo hut with fan and attached bathroom. There's so much to do in Kanchanaburi. Rooms are clean. Though small, it feels rather cosy. You can book various trips with Toi's agency from the guesthouse itself. Good english speaking guides.
Great views of River Kwai. It is pretty relaxing to just sit in the restaurant and enjoy the breeze.

Sams Guesthous: Sams Guesthouse
This is the only place that we stayed while here, so I can't compare to other accomodations. We liked the atmosphere this place had. you walk accross these ramps to ge to your room and in betweent the ramps there was really pretty leaves (lilly pad type leaves) growing.. It was lovely. The staff here was very nice too. I liked the way that the eating area was set up, you could kind of hide away in a little corner and just play cards if you wanted or read a book, it was nice.

Kanchanburi camping by the River Kwai: au naturel living
Surrounded by lotus ponds and very blended in wooden huts, this place by the river kwai was a nice place to spend the nite.
There are many accomodation places all about offering the same kinda deal (ie very tailored to the western traveller). I say 'western' because when they had a group of us (11 Singaporeans, comprising 5 hearing impaired guys and 6 girls), they asked if they cld cook thai food for us and we readily agreed.
we later found out that usually they dish out western food. Hmm.
