Death railway audio tour

by jeanbeanjb

I remember seeing a brochur about an audio tour of the Death railway where you walk for about 1hr with headphones through one section of the railway. If so, can anyone give me more info about it? Where does the tour start from and how much and what's it like?
thanks
Jean

RE: Death railway audio tour

by globerover

You will find that at the Hellfire Pass Museum, about 80km to the northwest of Kanchanaburi. The museum is located at the route 323, just above the notorious Hellfire Pass. The old track of the railway can be visited there, but the rails are gone, as are the bridges across the small valleys.

I did the tour without the audio guide, but I have seen it offered at the museum.

there are some infos on the Hellfire Pass and the museum on my VT page

Travel Tips for Kanchanaburi

Song Kran Festival

by nattybabe

Song Kran Festival actually runs longer in Kanchanaburi than in other parts of Thailand. We arrived thinking that we had finally escaped being constanly drenched only to find out that it runs for 2 extra days with the final day being the biggest and the longest.

Unlike other cities, Kanchanaburi's Song Kran is pretty much confined to a couple of streets with the main street getting shut down on the last day from 10am through to midnight. The other days the water throwing only starts at midday and lasts until 6pm.

On the final day I decided to join in the fun so I became the only westerner in a bar filled with Thai people all getting into the water throwing with gusto. I was bought beers and food by the locals and was given my own water bucket to throw at passing cars. They all thought it was great that a westerner has joining them. The music was blaring, people were dancing, everyone had water and clay and it was basically the best fun of the holiday!!

Watch the Elephants Bathe

by joyful_sun

Every morning, the elephants come with the Mahouts for their morning bath in the river then a hearty breakfast afterwards. Their "bathroom" was right behind our resort, the Jungle Rafts, so we got to see them go underwater and get their backs scrubbed. After bathing, we also had the chance to feed them breakfast, not your typical pay B20 Baht for a bunch of bananas, but a crate of pineapples, watermelons and other discarded fruits from the resort. The Mahouts were very nice and did not expect any tips or payments for the wonderful experience they shared with us. Although I did give them a tip because I was just too happy that morning.

Local Bus

by yen_2

I've seen this local bus when we get back to the city proper. If you're that keen type to know all what's to do in around the Kanchanaburi areas then this public transportation might be a help in getting around as of course it's cheaper and conveneint to go around the place.

The famous Death Railway of WWII

by shane_02

This is the famous Death Railway built during the WWII which the Japanese tried to link Thailand to Burma. The Japanese are trying to use this route to transport resources to its army in the north where heavy fightings with the Burmese and Allied soldiers are still on-going. It is also a popular tourist spot in Thailand.
