Tour information

by Iancccc

I have started planning a trip to Thailand for June next year with my family and I have come across a 3 day, 2 night tour to Kanchanaburi and up the river Kwai out of Bangkok. It takes in a bost ride, elephant ride, train ride and looking at the war museum etc.
Has anyone done this tour and what did you think of it. Or am I beter off to just go to Kanchanaburi and do sight seeing from there.
Thanks
Iancccc

RE: Tour information

We took a day tour out of Bangkok, arranged by one of the little travel agencies that are everywhere. They can usually book you for the next day, so you don't have to lock yourself in until you get there. They usually pick you up and drop you off right at your hotel, or you may have to clarify that during the price negotiation.

It was a long day, from maybe 06:30 until about 20:00. There were a dozen of us in a van which took us out to the river, a nice small number. Then we got into a boat to take us to the bridge. We had a snack there and then the van showed up and took us to a train station (a small pleasant outdoor affair). We got on the train and took a ride along the Death Railway, which was also pleasant as we could stick our heads out the open windows and jump off when it stopped for a few minutes. There were pleasant views overlooking the river and the hills beyond, which the guide told us were in Burma. (You can see scenes shot here in the movie "Platoon".) Then the van took us to the JEATH war museum, a WW2 cemetary, one of the required tourist-traps, and finally back to Bangkok.

One day makes me no expert, but I suspect that two nights might be over-kill.

Alternatively, you can book a similar tour when you arrive at Kanch, which is easily reached by bus. It's a nice small town to stay at for a night or two, as it is very relaxing.

Travel Tips for Kanchanaburi

Visit the Don Rak war cemetary

by austarman

This War Cemetery is also known as the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. It is located opposite Kanchanaburi's Railway Station on Saengchootoe Road. It contains the remains of 6,982 Australian, Dutch and British war prisoners who lost their lives during the construction of the Death Railway.

Old Fashioned Ruins

by HasTowelWillTravel

Muang Singh Historical Park along Route 323 houses some ruins from the early Thai Kingdom that have been partially re-claimed by the jungle. Unlike other areas of Thai ruins, they are not refurbished, so the original brickwork is laid bare. You are able to witness the large bricks that made up the area. And, due to its more remote location on highway 323, there are very few people there. Much fewer than at Sukhothai. So you have more time to explore on your own, feel as if you're an expeditionary archaeologist.

Most of the local tours in local agencies used this kind of mode in going to the other countryside. Like this one, it depends on how many people are there in one type of tour. But, I like it in a smaller group as you don't have to wait for all those other people around and they're just taking pics on anything..heheh

Elephant Riding

by PBY

I have been to Kanchanaburi twice. Once during a business trip (life's tough eh?) and once on holiday. The first time I went to an elephant park where the elephants performed for our amusement. I find this particularly distasteful and didn't enjoy it at all. So this time I ensured that it was only an elephant ride and nothing more.

It was immensely enjoyable but not everyone in our party was completely at ease at being so high up on a beast with a mind of its own - especially after reading the page of "don'ts" at the entrance, not to mention the disclaimer.

The ride lasts about 30 - 40 minutes and the animals seem well cared for and very playful

This camp was called Somnuk Elephant Camp should anyone else share my aversion for performing animals.

PS I can see that giving rides could be construed as performing but I have seen elephants "working" all over SE Asia so I personally find it more acceptable.

JEATH War Museum

by aussiejen

The JEATH war museum is an open air museum. It is a reconstruction of a prisoner of war hut used during the second world war.

It was established in 1977 to collect various items connected with the construction of the Death Railway in 1942/43.

There are many photos displayed along with articles written by former prisoners, their relatives and friends.

JEATH is an abbreviation of the names of the 6 countries involved : Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and Holland.

It is open daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
Cost : 300 baht
