Erawan Falls. Worth it ?

by Fernandocramos

Dear you all.
I will have a day tour with the guide Tong on january departing from BKK to visit Floating Market, Royal Articraft, Kanchanaburi , Tiger Temple and Erawan Falls.
She told me that to visit Erawan Falls we should skip some atractions during the way.
We are not interest in elephant ride (we will do it in Chiang Mai), not even in Monkey feed (we will do it in Bali), snake farms and while in Kanchanaburi just cross the bridge, visit the cementery, take some pictures and maybe ride on a boat, we dont want to ride on a train, then visit Erawan Falls (65 Km longer).
Do you think we should skip Erawan Falls and enjoy more things during the way ?
And how are the falls on january ?
Whic atractions do you suggest ?
For those who had a Tongs tour, which places she stoped on during the way ?
Thanks in advance

RE: Erawan Falls. Worth it ?

We visited the falls in January a couple of years ago and enjoyed it as part of a day trip we organized through our hotel. It had been very dry when we were there so the falls wre not in full flow but still lovely and worth a visit. Super to swim in the pools at the foot of the falls.Great to see the monkeys in more natural surrounding, they did not come to you to be feed. I really can't remember what else we did on that day trip. We were only in Kanchanaburi for four days and we crammed an awful lot in to those four days so what we did when I can't quite remember.I know we visited the Tiger temple, went on the train, a boat ride, the falls, the cemetry, ate at a couple of local places, visited a monkey school ( not that good) I think it would be worth incorporating it in to a day trip.

Travel Tips for Kanchanaburi

Local crafts

by yen_2

There are pretty things worth to buy for after all! I've seen this one while waiting for the train to the Nam Tok Station to see the Death Railway and the prices are just as cheap anyway. I was supposed to buy a very colorful dress in the other side of this long lines stores but hubby told me we'll go back in this station but we didn't.. Anyhow, they also have some nice things to remember to!

Thong Pha Phum area

by Aphro

Whatever you think about damning and flooding large areas of nature, 150 km away from town on Highway 323, this huge reservoir on Kwae Noi River has some raft and bungalow resorts with opportunities for boat rides, swimming and fishing. There is even a flooded temple visible above the waters that you can visit by boat.
You can also visit the hydro electric complex with the amazing facilities for the workers and their families who live there. The dam is 1000m long and 90m high and the view from the top is serene. You can drive to the top and park. There is a visitor's centre at the bottom but not always open so maybe no toilets!
There are green macaque monkeys living in the cliffs above, they are beautiful but not tame.
When I was there, one threw a rock at the policeman on guard, only just missing him but getting his moto! Deadly monkeys!

Train to the Death Railway

by yen_2

This is the train that go around to the Nam Tok Station to see the famous "Death Railway again or maybe they have 2 different trains for all those visitors who want to go there. It's best to set down at the left side of the train as to see the Railways but when we got in the train all the people are sitting in that, I sat down at the right side for all you know!=)

I guess, it departs every 30 mintus so, better to go in the toilet first. As it will only have a brief stop!

The Bridge over the River Kwai

by K1W1

Most people visit this bridge as part of a tour. If you can escape the tour and spend some time here, especially around dusk, the photo opportunities increase immensely. There is precious little activity around so no one is going to get in your way. Only the kids playing football in the background and they just add to the atmosphere. Take time to soak it all in.

All photos, unless marked otherwise, were taken by me and are copyright. Please do not use without permission. Thanks

Kanchanaburi "Jeath" War Museum

by austarman

A very sobering thing to do in Kanchanaburi is to visit the "Jeath" war museum next to the river Kwai.
There are many artifacts and photo's from world war 2 and the death railway as well as lots of historical facts about the region.

“JEATH” refers to the six countries involved in the building of the Death Railway - Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and Holland- and this museum is located to the south of the town centre next to Wat Chaichumphon or Wat Tai gives a vivid picture of the terrible conditions in which the Allied Prisoners-Of-War (P.O.W.s) lived.
