Kanchanaburi Overnight tour

by joolea

Hi all,
I would like to go to Kanchanaburi for one night and two days, and see the best it has to offer. Can anyone recommend a value for money tour? Just don't want to end up in a packed van and shuttled lifelessly from place to place.

I would consider doing the trip by public transport but given the lack of time I thought a tour might be better.

When are you going? If you wait for ANZAC day, you can attend the dawn service.

Unfortunately it has been a while since I did the bridge tour, and then I was in charge of the tour. Things have changed for the better it appears, but I really could not recommend a tour at this point. However, - I would consider a private car tour to the Bridge from Kanchanaburi. By that I mean that you can get to Kanchanaburi on your own, which is relatively easy from Bangkok, and then take a private tour with your own car/guide to the surrounding areas including the bridge. I understand that it is not that expensive, and all things considered, the freedom you get is worth the price. I have not used this tour operator, but have heard good things about them. They have private tours around the area including the Bridge.

Travel Tips for Kanchanaburi

Play with some Tigers at the Tiger Temple

by austarman

The Tiger temple in Kanchanaburi is a buddhist forest monastry known as Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno.
The temple is about 37kms from the town of Kanchanaburi.
The tigers have been tamed by the Buddhist monks that live there and they are quite tame.
Some people say they have been drugged as during the day they can be quite lazy and sleepy.
This is unlikely and is vehmently denied though by the staff and they say they have grown up with the Monks and have been tamed by them many since they were quite young.
Also they are well fed and mostly nocturnal so it is no surprise that they sleep a lot during the day. Getting up close and personal with these beautiful big animals was quite the highlight in Kanchanaburi for me.
You can pat them and play with them while they roll around and rest in there own private canyon.
Bright colours, loud noises and sudden movements are not allowed though and the staff will lead you to the tigers by hand and take photo's for you with at least 5 or 6 of the tigers with your own camera for 1000 baht.

Graffiti!

by thedouglas

I was constanly impressed by the complete absence of graffiti in Thailand - this cactus at kanchanaburi was the only example of graffiti I saw during my first holiday there! And, it is clealry done by tourists - obviously needing a fix! This was near the restaurant we ate lunch at, along the River Kwai. It has little engravings and writings all over it!

Van

by yen_2

We got there by a local package tour as it's comfortable, convenience and cheap to go there. They pick us up at around 6:30am to be there early. It's also advisable to go there by them. We're only 5 in the van so not much people and not much noise. You can sleep for about 3 hours to get there. It's one of the most and used mode in going there.

Softdrinks

by yen_2 about Street Vendors

I bought my very cold and lots of ice softdrinks here...I told this lady here(with hat) not to put an ice but she did put alot..wel, not too bad for the very hot day! You can but anything in around near the bridge. Most of the locals are selling anything just to cater the visitors who are in their place. I also noticed that the visitors, like me,had a hard time taking pictures because there were alot of people near the bridge. But, the tour guide told us it's because the're were several renovations that's why the street vendors are not properly arranged! Anyhow, that was a hell of the softdrink!=)

A historical bridge

by coolbananas

The bridge itself is not that special, it's more the story behind it that makes it worth the visit. The museum next to the bridge shows the story behind the construction and the exhausting life that the prisoners of war must have had.

You can take a walk on the bridge, but be very careful because there is nothing to hold on to!
