Koh Chang in May = good times or too hot/rainy?

by Fonda_leisure

Hi there!
I have loosely-booked 6 nights on Koh Chang in the first week of May - but am wondering if I should choose another island, as someone mentioned Koh Chang may be too hot? Bearing in mind I am from NZ, and anything over 35 degrees means I turn into a hot mess.

Any advice as to where to go in the first week of May in Thailand would be of great help!!!

Thanks

That's the hot season, so I suggest you find a nice resort with air conditioning and a pool.

Koh Chang is a good island as any other in Thailand.

The question you need to ask yourself can you handle the heat over 30 degrees with very high humidity because that will be the average temperature in Thailand and in may it will be in the mid thirties.

If you can't handle the heat then maybe Thailand is not the place for you, there is no fun in staying a hotel room with Air-con.

Thanks for the replies guys!
I can handle mid-thirties fine, esp. if there's a pool and air con. All good! Someone had told me it can go above 40 degrees and suggested that going to a more southern island in the gulf would be more pleasant (hence why I put out the question)... but by the sounds of it I might stick with Koh Chang :)

Have been to most main Islands like Koh Chang,Koh Samet, Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Islands, Ko Samui etc... and the heat is the same.

THe hotels on KC are little buggers!

THe temp will be in the mid 30s by the afternoon, but the rainfall gets quite heavy by May - you'll see some heavy showers but unlikely to get days of continuous rain.
So it will be hot and humid.

But why are the hotels little buggers? Because of it's VERY wet wet season, KC is very seasonal - it is the wettest island in Thailand and the main holiday season is from Nov to April - outside that time you may find many things are closed or running down or a low frequency - the hotels don't tell you this - you should check that any activities you want - snorkelling. boat trips other islands etc. are still available.

Hi Fonda,

I'm Scottish and am heading there in May so trust me when I say it won't be that bad.. I really feel the heat but have been in Vietnam in June and nothing can ever be as hot as that...

Travel Tips for Ko Chang

Handy info magazine, maps, all-in-one

by Saagar

I spent 10 days on Koh Chang in November and found this magazine both extensive in its coverage and handy in terms of size: Koh Chang, Trat & the Eastern Islands, published quarterly by White Sand Publications Company Limited.
Free of cost at major hotels and tourist info stands.
Their web site is useful for planning: www.whitesandsthailand.com . All this white sand stuff stems from Whitesands, which is a place on Koh Chang.

Don't Get Upset

by aukjejetty

When a coconut falls on top of your head, don't get upset. See it as a gift from above, it tastes delicious! Find some locals (anyone) who have a knive for you to split it in two and enjoy!

For coconutmilk: scrape the inside of the coconut with the lid of beerbotle, and squeeze the juice out of the shredded coconut. It is delicious to cook some rice in this juice!

The Jungle

by travelagent4thailand

A few people I met have never actually entered the jungle....and i wondered how many will.

About 80% or the island is covered with trees and jungle areas with the highest peak of 740+ meters... so why aren't many people in the jungles or is it that i do not know of them.

Defintiely try a trek or two, but i would recommend seeking the safe trail advice from the locals first....

Undiscover natural trees and wildlife and be sure to notice some exotic flowers and things you don't really see in the norms.

Before Ko Chang : Trat ll

by Arjaree

You have to go to a pier in Trat to get a boat ferry to Ko Chang and the same when you get back. The town itself is small. You can just wander around for a bit while you're waiting for a bus or something.. check out the fresh market.
