Ko Chang for 'oldies'

by anglomreen

After living in Hong Kong for many years (years ago) and visiting Thailand fairly often we would like to return, travelling cheaply as before. We're a good deal older this time and wonder if we will be the oldest backpackers in Thailand. We're in our mid to late 60's now and still fit. We enjoy the company of the young however don't want to feel too out of place! We have heard good things about Ko Chang which we have not visited before.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks (hopefully) in advance.

Although we are a bit younger than you (late fifties), last year we back packed through Laos and Cambodia and ended up on Ko Chang.
It isn't quite as hectic as some other Thai islands and only the west coast is really worth visiting. The whole of the centre of the island is still forest.
It seems to have a mixed age group of tourists.
I can highly recommend reasonably priced accommodation at Baan Rim Nam (House on the water's edge). It is a lovelly little place with just three rooms, Booking in advance is a must.
By the way when we stayed at Baan Rim Nam one room was occupied by a young couple from Finland and the other by a seventy-five year old back-packing Granny travelling alone!

Hi Ballyann

VERY many thanks for your very positive reply! Especially about the granny of 75! Well done her. I'm already thought by my 8 grandchildren (my grt grandson is probably too young at 7 months) to be quite 'with it' since I use a playstation!

We live in France and have done for the last 7 years. France is fine in the summer and we admire the culture but the winters.............oh dear! So we will definitely make Koh Chang one our first ports of call since we plan to stay in Thailand for about 3 months at least, it sounds ideal.

Thank you again.

Very best wishes

The first time I was at Koh Chang was very special, being almost on our own. The second time a lot had changed, there are ATM's now, internet everywhere, and even 7eleven opened up here. Still there are not too many tips on Koh Chang on VT yet. Therefor here a few links that can help you a lot further on accomodation and things to do on Koh Chang.

Kayaking in Ko Chang

by alvis

Can rent kayaks on all the beaches the best beach we found for kayaking was Kai Bae beach where you are able to go out to small deserted islands. Can get equipment from most places renting snorkels and flippers aswell as the kayak if you want to try snorkelling. Use proper trips when it comes to snorkelling probably less expensive, and you are brought to some beautiful islands, you need to try these.

Restaurant hub at Baan Bai Lan

by Saagar about various

The small settlement of Baan Bai Lan hosts a number of good restaurants. I much liked the mexican one, but there are several others, too, enough to provie for good food and variations - and a great escape from stifling hotel dinners. Very good Mexican food and atmosphere.

Elephant trekking

by sunshinee

Here they provide elephant trekking. We just went there to visit the elephants but they were chained in a very small walking area. I like elephants but don't like to see them being trapped like this.

To Ban Bang Bao by boat

by sachara

The day after we visited Ban Bang Bao by feet we could make a revisit with our boat. It was a nice boatride in the Bang Bao bay with nice views at the surrounding mountains, beaches with palmtrees, the peninsula and the fishing village at stilts. This time all the fishing boats wer back from the sea.

The Thai woman from the restaurant in the harbour in Trat joined us and offered us a sweet cocos snack from the village.

It was quite a difference to be in the tiny village with the two of us like yesterday or with seven people this time. We walked also to the land to have a look at a coconut farm where monkeys were trained to pick up the coconuts. We all got a coconut for drink.
