Pineapple Guesthouse: Laid back, personalble, friendly, helpful :)

by Arial_27

Our room was a LOT nicer than we expected considering the price and what the hostel looked like from the outside. It doesnt look like much at first, but you get just as much as you do staying at one of the fancier places. We only payed $6 for our room, and we got a mini fridge with free water bottles, cleaning service, AC, private bathroom, and free internet/computer use. The room was also very cute and decorative. Some friends at ours stayed at a more expensive place not far away and suprisingly it wasnt as nice as this one.

We were also close to Karon beach, only a 10 minute walk. Food, shops, bars and tour agencies are all very closeby. Patong beach is the big party area of Phuket and it costs about 350 bhat in a taxi to get there. Patong is for the younger crowd, and Karon had more older people relaxing. We enjoyed our stay here though and wouldn't do any different.

The hostel also has a small cafe/restaurant attached to it where we ate at almost every day. It was cheap and yummy. Pad thai and a banana shake for example, would only cost 70 bhat. Those are amazing prices for Phuket.

There's also a bookswap and a laundry service. The owner held our luggage for us the day we left so we could shop around before leaving Phuket. He went above and beyond in terms of helpfulness. In the lobbeyroom, you'll find an entire booklet he's written up for guests about things to do in the area, stuff he recommends, stuff to watch out for, etc. Very helpful. I'd recommend this place.

The owner is a British man with a Thai wife and children. The hostel is very personalbe that way. They treat you well and are very approachable.

Cliff Cottage: Just like staying at a friend's place

by Arial_27

I'm calling this a hostel, but really it stood out from any other hostel we stayed at. You don't have just a room, but your OWN private cottage. Most of them are on top of a hill so it feels like you're in the wilderness. Ours had a sunset view and it was overlooking the ocean. We couldn't have asked for a better view.

The whole hostel area itself is pretty. The common area sits over this cove where you can go snorkeling, swimming, or just sit in a hammock and relax. You can also eat here for really cheap. Their pad thai is amazing, and only 50 bhat ($1.50 roughly) They also serve drinks.

Bang Bao is the furthest away part of the island, but we don't regret at all the small extra distance we travelled to stay here. You're a little further away from the partying/nightlife, but its super relaxing and a great atmosphere. There's still tons of shopping, dive courses/tours, places to eat and other stuff to do. And the closest beach is about a 20 minute walk. Motorcycle rental is an option though on the island.

The owner of this place is British, so it was refreshing to finally be able to communicate thouroughly with someone in Thailand. He's very nice, laid back. You'll feel just like you're crashing at a friends.

Khaosan Baan Thai: Couldn't be friendlier if they tried!

by Arial_27

This was a home away from home. One of the nicest places we stayed at in Thailand.

10 minute walk from Khao san road, free breakfast (eggs, toast, sausage, some veggies) nice rooms, great staff, free computer/internet use, nice lounge area, clean, laundry service, and airport transfer service.

My ONLY complaint was that our room had 2 dans instead of AC. It was fine at night, but I had a failed nap during the day though because it was too hot and stickey for me. My boyfriend was fine though, so it could just be my low heat tolerance.

I'd highly recommend this place.

Just an exceptionally friendly staff. They don't speak a lot of English, but are super nice and you feel very welcome here. They'll go out of their way to help you.

Lebua: Bangkok's Most Fabulous Hote

by all_about_eve

I stayed in Lebua for four days with two friends. We booked a standard room via the hotel's website but were upgraded to a junior suite. Everything was simply perfect: the spacious rooms, delicious breakfasts, location, helpful staff and the fab bar on the roof. It's a heavenly place.

Yao Yai Beach Resort: Island Getaway

by arielky

I stayed three wonderful weeks in a beach hut at the Koh Yao Yai Resort, swimming with the high tide twice a day, visiting occasionally with other guests, mostly European, beachcombing, reading books leisurely, swinging in a hammock on the beach watching the crabs, and doing some writing. It was a wonderful vacation. I grew tanner and tanner every day until I had a deep tan. I got up every morning to watch the sunrise from the east side of the island color the water and sky and made sure to watch every sunset in the evening.

I often just lolled around near the beach in the warm tropical green water. I could never get over the lovely green color of the sea, even as I was swimming in it.

The views of the water were outstanding. We were right on the beach with a huge vista before us. Three dolphins came in close to the beach near the end of my first visit. Every day I saw some different kind of life, a needle-nose electric blue fish in the water, a two-inch green grasshopper, sea hawks circling in thermals overhead, frogs, exotic butterflies, a guppy, schools of tiny fish, crabs still in their shells, crabs everywhere on the beach, a lone shore bird.

The local Thai staff serving in the restaurant and cleaning the rooms were wonderful, always smiling those gentle, lovely smiles.

The sound of tropical birds and monkeys from the coconut trees and jungle backing up the resort made this an unforgettable vacation.

Urban Age: stay in Silom instead of Khaosan Road

by putri_jogja

Please check on www.hostelworld.com for backpackers accomodation.
Actually backpacker heaven in Bangkok is Khaosan Road. But last time i didnt stay there, but in Silom area.
The reason is Silom is near from BTS and MRT station. I got room for 300 Thai Bath per person per night. It was Jan 2010.

Poppies: Best place to be on Samui

by RonBroens

Perfect place and good restaurant

Asia Hotel, Bangkok: Central

by tigertribal

July 2003

Centrally located for easy access to all the shopping and popular attractions of Bangkok. 5 mins from Siam Square. Also connected to Ratchathewi Skytrain Station.

The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good and we had a complimentary dinner which was also very good.

The swimming pool was a nice respite from the heat but beware, the metal bits on the the sun beds do get very hot.

Blue Lagoon Hotel: Koh Samui

by tigertribal

July 2003.

On the outskirts of Chaweng beach, 5 mins walk to the first of the bars. Swiss owned.

Initialy we were offered a bungalow across a busy main road, off the main hotel complex, but the room smelled damp & there was little natural light as there was a lot of vegetation growing around outside, so we opted for a ground floor room just off the swimming pool which was fine.

The swimming pool area is small & shaded for part of the day. The hotel is on the beach but the water is not very deep & very warm.

Breakfast was nice & plentiful. Ate at the restaurant one evening & had the Royal Thai Banquet which had excellent food & good entertainment.

The staff were friendly & helpful.

Rabbit Resort Hotel: Pattaya

by tigertribal

June 2008.

Quaint boutique resort, featuring lovely Thai-style bungalows. The hotel is located on Jomtein Beach, south of Pattaya. The hotel is nearly beach front as you cross a road to reach the sea. The road is closed during the day .

We stayed in a "forest room", ground floor. The bedroom was spacious with a big comfortable double bed & large flat screen TV. The bathroom/dressing area was also spacious with a large stone shower cubical. To top it off, there was a fully fitted kitchen.

The lush grounds were very pretty. There are 2 swimming pools, 1 of which is for adults only.

Breakfast was very good & ample. We ate at the Hotel restaurant a couple of evenings & their meals were excellent & not vastly expensive.

The staff were efficient, helpful & friendly.
