Sopheak,
Once you are on Khon Kaen, you should not have any trouble finding another bus to Viengchian. The bus terminal should have information and tickts. Of course you will still have to stop at customs and immigration, but there should be bus service directly.
Good luck!

There is even an 'international bus' that runs between Khon Khaen and Vientiane/Viengchan Laos. It's an air con bus and it's pretty cheap. Last year it ran several times a day but now it's just once per day. Otherwise, you can take buses between Khon Khaen and Nong Khai and transfer from the bus station to the Friendship Bridge/border via tuk tuk or via another 'international bus' that runs between Nong Khai and Vientiane. If you're in a rush, then it's faster but costs more to take a tuk tuk to the obrde rThe international bus starts/ends at Viengchan's Talat Sao/Morning Market Bus Station. You have to have a Lao visa and your passport to buy the bus ticket.
There's also the train which goes all the way to Nong Khai from Hualamphong Train Station in Bangkok and also picks up passengeres en route to Nong Khai (meaning that you can also catch the train in Khon Khaen, too).

We've taken the overnight sleeper train from Bkk to Nong Khai, fast and easy (no hassle from travelling by day and having to arrange a place to sleep, saves a lot of time !). There you can take a tuktuk to the friendship bridge. From there you can take a bus to Vientiaene.

Travel Tips for Khon Kaen

Always smile

by carmenlilly

The Thais are one of the most friendly people on the planet.
Even though you might be stressed out sometime, NEVER loose your head in public. It's like the worst thing you can do and considered as very very rude.

As a not-Thai, especially a female, don't take looks personal. Since Khon Kaen is not a real tourist city they are not used to seeing that many not-Thai girls or women there.

Most of the people there speak hardly any English, but if you're patient they try to understand and help you the best they can !!!

Elephant Feeding

by carmenlilly

In Khon Kaen elephants are used for tranporting goods. So chances are good, that when you walk around town or sit in an outdoor restaurant an elephant will pass by.

If you wanna take a picture of the elephant you usually have to buy a bucket of bananas form the elephant guy (as a support I guess). You may even feed those bananas to the elephant yourself!!

Funny thing is to see elephants when it's dark, they have a blinking light on their tail then :)

Khon Kaen University

by carmenlilly

Go and visit Khon Kaen University. It's the biggest University in North-east Thailand and is located on a huge areal. There are not that many forgein students and student dorms look pretty scary when passing them ....

Food Market

by carmenlilly

One of the most interesting things when visitng a different country and culture is the food.
Thailand is famous vor its delicous food and spices and Thais do it very spicy! HOT !
Opposite of the Charoen Thani Princess Hotel is a big food market.
Locals sell fresh vegetables, spices, fruit etc. If you dare to try one is up to you.
To me seeing huuuuuuuge bags full of chilli was impressing enough!

Nongwang temple

by pattayaraj

The old temple of Khon Kaen, located in old city area. Inside the temple have a tall building called Phrathat Nongwang. It housed the relics and museums. You can climb up to the topmost (floor 9th) and take a nice shot of Khon Kaen city and Kaen Nakorn pond.
