standard coffin for the dead
the monks will give (sell) you a standard coffin to cremate a dead relative.
if the family is too poor, the munks can donate a coffin....other believers in buddhism already paid for it ...see it as a gift

I'm sure Thai Airways has flights from Khon Kaen; not sure aboput other carriers, but you could check their websites:

Hi -
Air Asia has a daily flight - check the website:
http://www.airasia.com/
for more details. You'll almost certainly have to connect in Bangkok for a flight to the south.
Cheers,
Jeremy

The sacred shrine is located in front of Sala Suk Chai, on Thepharak Road in the compound of the Khon Kaen Municipality Office. A famous monk and former governor of Khon Kaen placed a stone inscription from an ancient site in Amphoe Chum Phae here for a Buddhism rite and set up the city pillar shrine.
Depending on why you are in Khon Kaen and how much time you have, I'd recommend to talk a walk around town. It certainly is a pretty exotic place for people like me.
Apart from nice street scenes you can also spot some animals, which for me are not every-day life :) (and I'm not talking of the elephantes now).
Be aware though that it can be very humid there and that even only short walks are just exhausting. (surely depending on where u come from ;) )
Or Thai Silk Pavilion located in College outside Chonnabot District. This place exhibited Thai silk from past to present. The first floor exhibited the new style of Thai silk by the supported project from JICA (Japan) and the second floor exhibited Thai silk in old style and the development of silk.Outside located 2 model of Esan houses in applied style. There's also a shop where sells silk products.Almost come from locals and students in the college.
Open 09.00-17.00 Closed on Wednesday.
To visit by bus, take a Green bus from Ban Phai District Bust Terminal via Munjakiri District. The college 'll be on the left.Or from Khon Kaen town, takes a bus Khon Kaen - Nakhon Sawan.
I love this place. It has all the amenities of a fast-paced, cosmopolitan city, and yet it lazily oozes with inherent Isaan cultural traditions and lifestyles. Rickshaws slowly idle past luxury Mercedes at traffic lights. A street vendor sells traditional Isaan, spicy somtam in front of the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. Rice farmers stand next to corporate businessmen in line at the local bank.
The pace of life in Khon Kaen is slow compared to other Thai cities such as Bangkok, Pattaya or Chiang Mai. The streets are devoid of tourists and there are relatively few Westerners to be seen. The place has a charm which hasn't been tainted by some of the sleazier aspects of tourist hot-spots.
Khon Kaen is the gateway to North East Thailand and, as such, it's a great base for easy travel into Laos, as well as for exploring wonderful locations along the famous Mekong river. And it's also cheap, which makes it great for those of us travelling and living on a tight budget.
