While you are in Khorat you might want to take a side trip to nearby Phimai. In Phimai you have one of the better restored wats. There is a nice little museum too! Of course, you can't miss the "Biggest Banyan Tree in Thailand!" (Their claim!)

Figure on about an hour for the ride from the Khorat bus station. Two bus stations in Phimai, an old one downtown and a slightly newer one on the main highway. Phimai Inn is across the street (almost) from the newer bus station.

I volunteered on a couple archeology digs in Phimai years ago. We used the Phimai Inn. Cheap hotel rooms, have pool, food is okay. You can walk to the Phimai Wat from the hotel in around 20 - 30 minutes.

Good luck.

Wat ban rai is in Dan Khun Thod district which around half hour drive to Korat town and around 40 mins or more, drive from town to Khonburi district where Wat Pamahawan located. These 2 wats is in different side of Korat town.

Travel Tips for Nakhon Ratchasima

Activities in cool season at Wang Nam Khieo

by Wann

In cool season at Wang Nam Khieo, it is very cold ( I mean cold in tropical country ) so many people like to visit resorts on mountain or visit national park or somewhere in higher land to camping. It’s a very popular activity. Many resorts in Wang Nam Khieo change the area to be campsite and I saw some campsites, well as on photo, they set tents too close and too crowded. I couldn’t feel camping that way but enjoy the view, the cold and beautiful fog cover range of mountain in the early morning anyway.

Sema Ancient City

by pattayaraj

The Sema Ancient City was the city in Dvaravati period as the first community of Nakorn Rachasima. Local called Muang Sema or Sema city. Nowaday,Sema city just remains the city moat as double ovals shape with 2 kms wide and 3 kms long. Though the architectures was destroyed but the archaeologists found some Dvaravati artifacts here, such as Bronze Buddha images,Terra cotta Buddha images, etc. All evidences which found here dated to 13 Buddhist Centuries at the time of Sri Janasa city or so called Khorakhapura city flourished as the center of this area. The evidence also told that the people believed in Buddhism and then in 14 Buddhist Centuries, they changed to Hinduism or Brahminism which was an influence from Khmer Empire. The example of Khmer evidences here 're Khmer sanctuaries,Siva Linga bases and Khmer potteries. In 16 Buddhist Centuries, the power center changed to Phimai city, this Sema city was abandoned.

Pimai Historical Park

by MickyT162

"Pimai Historical Park"

Pimai is located in the Northeatern Province of Nackon Ratchasima. The town is small but at the heart of it stands Pimai Historical Park, home to one of Thailands finest surviving Khmer Temple complexes, reminiscent of Cambodias Angkor Wat.

It has been said that this marvelous shrine which stands 28 meters tall was the model for the Angkor Wat built a 100 years or so later. Although smaller and less significant than its more famouse cousin it does share numerous design features.

A Hindu-Mahayana Buddist Temple and founded by Khmer King Jayavarman V during the 10th Century but eventually completed by King Suriyavarman I in the early 11th Century.

The temple was still under some reconstruction at this time by the Fine Arts Department making only small areas of the complex inaccessible for safety reasons, otherwise the majority of the temple could be viewed throughout.
