Visiting Nong Khai

by KJHawkins

I'm coming from Vientiane to Nong Khai and am debating whether to stop off for a few days to visit the town. Being the opposite side of the mekong from Vientiane would it be too similar an experience or is there much to do and see. I've seen images of the buddhist sculpture park which looks lovely.
Is it a beautiful town and how far and easy is it to get out into a surrounding village to explore. Basically is it worth stopping off here?

Don't bother.

You have a similar buddha park in Vientianne anyway...

This north east part of Thailand is basically the same as Laos, which was only carved out by Thailand for the French during the colonial period.

Happy travelling

Nong Khai is just one of these ordinary Thai towns. Not bad, but nothing (very) special. It has (of course) some temples and a market, which is not as commercialised as others in Thailand.

We liked driving along the mekong river, visiting small Thai villages and remote temples.

happy travels

Herbs seller

by imran8852

On our way to find some food we stumble upon this place that sell many kind of herbs but sadly everything including the price was written in Thai. Papa only speaks ‘broken Thai’ so it’s quite hard to ask about those herbs. So Many Things!

Guest House

by imran8852

There are many guest houses in Nong Khai. Finding one to suit your budget or liking won’t be so hard…I guess this is because most people make Nong Khai as a stopover to Laos but many has stayed longer & fell in love with Nong Khai…

Victory Park Golf & Country Club

by chiabh

Easily the jewel of the Northeast, the par-72 course excel in many areas... the quility and degree of difficulty of the fairways and greens, the general proficiency of the caddies and overall club facilties...

The only drawback is the small portion of food at the clubhouse ands only Singha, Chang or Heineken beer are available at the 19th hole drink hut...

Visit a Solitary Monk living at Phu Wua

by FarangYai

There is a solitary monk living in the Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary west of Nongkhai. When an elephant died in a fight for dominance with another bull last year, the bones were brought to his cave after cremation. About a month after the bones were brought there, the winning elephant in the fight, probably smelling the sent of his rival, came up the hill to the temple looking around. The monk has a photo of the top of the elephants head taken from a ledge above him and was even able to touch the elephant. The elephant then tried to get into the temple cave where the bones were stored. There are some marks on the stone around the cave made by the elephant’s tusks. The door to the temple held, saving the temple from destruction by the elephant.
You can spend the night under the rock ledges outside the cave . . . if you dare.
Find out how to get there on the website.
