from Ubon Ratchathani airport to Chong Mek border

by sjz

Can anyone tell me how to get to Chong Mek border from Ubon Ratchathani airport? Thanks a lot.

As previously posted, there is an 'international bus' that runs between Ubon Rathcathani and Pakse but BUT you could also take the bus from the main bus station (also up the road from Big C) to the border. I took one some years back before the 'international bus' that was a VIP bus which had originated from Bangkok's Mochit Bus Station (near Chatuchak Market) and was headed to the Chong Mek border crossing. It hit Ubon around 6am and stopped only long enough to pickup passengers headed to the border.

With regards to the international bus, you might want to check it they require you to have a Lao visa in advance because like the international bus that runs between Vientiane and Udonthani, this bus requires travellers to have a Lao visa in advance because they don't want to wait around for travellers wanting to get a Lao visa upon arrival. Might also check the Thai Tourism Office for Ubon.

Chong Mek Border
Chong Mek is the boundary between Thailand and Laos that marks the end of Highway No. 217, which is 89 kilometers long. This highway will be connected to a 38-kilometre road in Laos leading to Pak Sae, which will be part of the Asian Highway.

Travel Tips for Ubon Ratchathani

raft-restaurants

by Nitsana

Have a meal at one of the raft restaurants. You get there by crossing the river bridge towards the side where you get the train. Then, walk down the steps so you are on the river edge. turn left and keep walking on the road till you start seeing restaurants. good food, really relaxed and cool environment. Great way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Ubon Ratchathani university district

Very nice and colourful neighbourhood with good food and always smiling people.
Lots of places where you can eat at democratic price because of the students who
live there around the university.

U-bon

The attractions here catch my interest was not about the town but the scence of the river at the border to Loas that more than 100 km away from town. All trips were happened over 10 years ago, I couldn't remember much the name of places I've been to . This year, 2007, I had a work trip visit here again just for several days, hope to be back again for my own holidays.

Ubon - A Good Base to See Many Things in Isan

by AlbuqRay

"Hire a Good Driver"

There are many things to see in the Ubon Ratchathani area (called "Ubon" for short). The sights include Sapue Rapids, Kaeng Tana (what's left), Khong Chiam, Sao Chaliang, Pha Taem, Chong Mek, and Sirindhorn Dam in Thailand. There is also Preah Vihear in Cambodia. I have separate pages for Preah Vihear (a must see) and Pha Taem.

I shall put quite a bit of information on Kaeng Tana (tips and travelogue) here, since it may no longer exist. According to an internet article, it was blasted away in Jul 04 by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. What a shame. It was a beautiful place. These pictures from Apr 04 may be some of the last ones.

To see all of these places near Ubon, you probably need to hire a driver. We hired Mr. Piboon through the Hotel Laithong. I highly recommend Mr. Piboon. He knows the Ubon area well, is punctual, and is an excellent driver. If you book him through the hotel, it is 1500 baht per day plus gasoline (500 baht). However, he told us if you call him directly (09-2814094), it is only 1200 baht plus gasoline.

Wat Tham Khu Ha Sawan - Upper Level

by AlbuqRay

"Bell Tower with a View"

The bell tower looked interesting but there were people there when we arrived. We spent so much time on the lower level that we did not stop on the way back. I should have paid more attention to the upper level.

"Buddha Protected By Naga"

This large Buddha image was near the gate down to the "cave."

"Gate to Cave"

This is the gate to the lower level. You go down some stairs and turn left at the elephant statue to get to the "cave."

"View from the Gate"

There is a great view of Khong Chiam and the Mekong River from the gate.

"New White Temple"

A new white temple is being built at Wat Tham Khu Ha Sawan.
