Thai - Laos border
I`m traveling from Bangkok to Laung Prabang by plane from there down to Vientiane via Vang Vieng , back across border at Nong Khai.Plan to meet Thai lady from Udon Thani in LP,back across border together. What reception will we receive in Laos traveling as a couple, what problems are we likely to encounter at border crossing, what problems will lady face getting into Laos.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Re: Thai - Laos border
The only problems you will face are those related to visas/permissions to enter. Thai should have no problem entering Lao as there is free travel in ASEAN countries for ASEAN citizens. You will be treated seperatly when crossing borders. Make sure you have valid Lao visa each time you want to cross their border, and are covered for entering Thailand multiple times. In hotels etc you'll have no problem.
Re: Thai - Laos border
Thanks .Did read one thread of Thai girl(traveling with farang boyfriend)jumping out of car when approaching Lao police, hiding ,getting back in car when police were passed, must`ve thought she`d be mistaken for a Laotion girl,or she was a villan.Farang was mystified but didn`t question local custom.
Would you recomend any other places of interest along this route. Thanks again
Travel Tips for Udon Thani
"Certainly not a tourist destination...yet."
My decision to stop over in Udon Thani came as a last minute one. I needed to get to Bangkok from Vientianne and decided to take a bus into Udon Thani and fly from there to Bangkok on Thai Airways as it was much cheaper than flying from Vientianne to BKK. I had had enough with Laos and Vientiane in particular, a rather boring city to my mind and decided to go early and spend a couple days in Udon Thani, thinking anything's got to be better than Vientiane. It was.
Udon Thani is such a pleasant, low key city that within hours I was feeling right at home. Not much to do or see here in the way of tourist attractions and so I almost immediately felt unhurried, relaxed.
People were friendly here, a bus dispatcher went to great lengths to help me find my way to my hotel, The Englishman's Retreat, by locating a map and relaying the location to my non English speaking tuk tuk driver.
More to come soon.....

Visit Ban Chiang from Udon Thani
"Ban Chiang - Early Bronze Age Village"
Udon Thani, called Udon for short, was a regional base for the USA during the Vietnam War. About the only reason to go there now is to visit the world heritage site of Ban Chiang, which is about one hour outside of town.
