I've only stayed there once and have gone thru a couple of times but from a recent article I read, there are quite a number of Vietnam era vets that live in the suburbs around the town. I even came across a travel forum for the town so if you google Udon/Udorn, you should be able to find this forum and get very specific answers from expats.

Udon Thani is very inexpensive compared to other cities in Thailand, such as: Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai.

Personally, I think you could live there quite well for <$1,000 U.S. a month.

But a lot depends on what type of lodging you want, Thai or Falang food, what type of entertainment you are reffering to; i.e. movies, bowling, whatever.

common expat mistakes feel free to add your own
investing a dangerously large percentage of capital in risky investments

no1 deciding to open a bar our restaurant with no previous catering our business
experience next to 20 our so other similar establishments

no2building a resort hotel in a poor location away from areas of interest just because the land was free from your partners family

no3purchase large amounts of gold for your beloved only to find out they have weighed it in to loan/give the brother in law / chauffeur / boyfriend / enough money to open a pig farm in the middle of a swine flu pandemic

no4overconfidence in making money and opening a business just because you have the money in Thailand to do it when you where not a successful entrepreneur in your home country

Udon Thani Northeast Thailand

"Soi Samakee 9, Tombul Nong Khon Kwang"

I try to get here at least once a year just to chill out. This is where my brother-in-law lives with his family.

I first started coming here in 1989 when there weren't many Farangs about (excepting the Americans that stayed here after the Vietnam war and the Missionaries). Now there's more Europeans here than you can shake a stick at.

Unusual destination - need to get out of town!

"Gecko Villa & the Isaan Experience"

Udon itself is mainly a commercial town - rice trading etc. Found a great place to stay called Gecko Villa, run by a young Thai couple who stay nearby. A great house and private pool surrounded surreally by rice fields. A great base from which to explore the rural villages, Nong Harn listed wetlands and Ban Chinag archelogical sitre as well as Nong Khai and the gateway to Laos.

A real expereince with truly great hosts who went out of their way to show us the area and introduce us to local lifestyle.

Good food too.

Have a site at www.geckovilla.com

From there, travel to Nong Khai and Laos, or along the Mekong to Loei (taking the old road along the river). A very scenic trip. Basic accommodation and food but a great journey.
