Whitewater rafting
by ladyleo0408
Whitewater rafting on the Maetang river in Chiang Mai is something for everyone to try. The river has a rapid grade of 2 - 4 on a scale of 1 - 6. Sounds scary, but it's actually not that bad. You just have to mind the cold water, the hot sun and the unpredictable flow of the river. Helmets and life jackets should be provided by the tour agency organising this trip, please check that they do! Instructions will be given on land before getting on the river. It's good for one to remember the commands that the captain will give when on the river, as this activity requires team effort to ensure everyone's safety.
Do check with the tour operators as to how long the entire journey would take. It takes 3 hours just to get to the Maetang river from town and the journey downriver takes another 2.5 to 3 hours. Don't be put off by tour operators that charge a little higher than others, as these operators will often provide a safety crew to monitor your journey from the banks of the river(and take photos for a fee). Lunch is also provided.
Wear long-sleeved t-shirt to protect yourself from the sun and sports sandals.
Chiang Mai Institution
by trisanna about Good View
The Good View has been around for a long time and is almost an institution for live music. This is a wonderful restaurant/bar, which has something for everyone. They have a very extensive food menu-quite international. Even sushi. Before the band comes on-there is a dj playing some house and rave like music. Around 10.30 pm a house band comes on, which are quite good. I was impressed. The restaurant is right near the river. This place is mostly popular with Thais, but you do see a bunch of farangs. Highly recommended.
Italian in Chiangmai
by evancheong about Pum Pui
An Italian restaurant with a thai name....interesting eh. I'm sure this restaurant has been mentioned in many tourist guidebooks and good reviews and I'm just about to give it some positive ratings too.
Personally the pricing is alittle steep given you are in Thailand. But the quality is good and very authentic Italian dishes. But again, if you are visiting Thailand, why bother to go Italian when Thai food is super delicious. I tried this restaurant because I was very curious with those good ratings that I MUST try it for myself. I really like the Parma ham with melon. The Parma ham was fresh.
A fabulous cooking experience in Chiang Mai
by teacherbob
I spent two days at the Kao Hom Cooking School in Chiang Mai, and fortunately for me, I was the only student both days. Since I had signed up several weeks in advance, Tim, the owner/teacher of the school, gave me private lessons for the regular price. She is a classy, friendly lady with excellent skills in the kitchen and an equally excellent command of English. I was picked up at my hotel in town and delivered back at the end of the day. Her lovely country estate was a relief from the traffic and the noises of Chiang Mai. All we had to do was prepare the food and eat it, her quiet, efficient helpers took care of everything else. If you want an experience to remember, I would urge anyone interested in learning more about Thai cooking to take this class. You may not be as lucky as I was (she has large groups on occasion), but I guarantee you will be pleased with the results. I can't wait to make a Thai dinner for my family!
