 | Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel: Best Hotel Lobby Downtown!

Lobby Lounge of Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel by DarkRay If large, beautiful and elegant hotel lobby is your thing, then you really cannot go wrong with staying at Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel, which probably boast one of the most gorgeous lobby downtown as of May 2005, courtesy of very recently completed retrofitting works. Hotel wise, this is your typical tourist class 4-star hotel with 450 rooms, catered mainly to package tourists. The hotel is well known in Chiang Mai and so, you should not have any problems communicating the location of the hotel to tour agencies, tuk tuk drivers, or any other people in Chiang Mai. The location of the hotel itself is quite excellent and is only a short 5 minutes walk away from the famous (read: touristy) Night Bazaar. Not being in the centre of the market activity, it can offer its guest more piece and quiet than the other tourist class hotels within the Night Bazaar, such as Royal Princess Hotel, or Suriwongse Hotel. Around the hotel, there are a few good restaurants, including the more-expensive-than-average Whole Earth Restaurant, which is practically a landmark in town. Should you clamour for night action, the Ping River is rather close by as well, where the better bars are located. Breakfast was excellent and consist of a wide variety of items ranging from ABF essentials such as bacon, toasts and eggs, to continental breakfast items like corn flakes and pancakes to Thai delights, including chicken grue and boiled rice. Just avoid the fried rice and noodles at all cost as they are positively disgusting :-P The staff are okay, but because they are always busy due to the large number of guests checking in and out, their smiles seemed kind of "forced". For reference, I stayed in a twin room at the cost of about US$32 per room per night.

 | Karinthip Hotel: Resort-Like Hotel Downtown

Breakfast Table In Karinthip Village by DarkRay Karinthip Village is a hotel which exudes a very laid back and tranquil atmosphere. It is located on the East side of Chiang Mai Town, near Tha Phae Gate. It is actually less of a hotel and more of a resort. You will not find tourists coming by the bus load to this 50 room lanna-style hotel. Instead, you will find a calming serenity and the friendliest of smiles here. The staff are amazing and are unfailing in greeting you with a sincere smile when you meet them. As it was the low season when I stayed, they even remembered which room I stayed at and were ready with my room key each time I went back from my outings. And oh yeah, the receptionists were very pretty too! :-) Do note that since this is not a hotel catered to the mass tourists, breakfast was not a buffet affair. Rather, you choose from a breakfast set from a menu if your room rates include breakfast. The ABF for example consist of: 1. Toast, Roll, or Crossaint with Butter & Jam 2. Eggs prepared in any way you like, with Ham, Sausage, or Bacon. 3. Freshly Cut Fruit or Juice 4. Coffee or Tea In all and all, this is a wonderful hotel I will definitely go back to when I revisit Chiang Mai. The only real disadvantage I can think of is that it is somewhat far away from the Night Bazaar. In my case, I paid about US$43 per room per night for a twin room. Some Tips: 1. Unless I am mistaken, this hotel used to be known as Karinthip Ville, instead of Karinthip Village. For some reasons it seemed to me that online hotel booking sites that uses the "Karinthip Ville" name seem to charge a higher rate that those which uses the newer moniker. 2. This hotel is relatively new and apparently only started their operations in 2003. Thus, it is not that well-known. If you need for example to take a tuk tuk to the hotel, just mention "Wat Chompoo" to the driver instead. The entrance of Wat Chompoo is practically next to the hotel and everybody in Chiang Mai knows where Wat Chompoo is, as it is some sort of a sibling to the famous Wat Prathat Doi Suthep.

Rose Guest House by DarkRay While there are certain no lack of budget accomodation options within the old city walls, Rose Guest House somehow caught my attention. Perhaps it was the rustic setting, but I am not sure. In any case, this guest house was certainly more popular than the rest, judging by the crowd in it. Let me clarify that while I did not actually stay here, but did explore the guest house to find out more about it. Rates starts from 60 Baht (less than US$2) for just a bed in their dormitory, to 160 Baht (just over US$4) for a single room fitted with a fan, to 210 Baht (just over US$5) for a triple room. All bathroom facilities are shared and there are no air-conditioning available. But do note that the walls seemed very thin and so if you are concerned about privacy, you may want to reconsider staying here. This guest house is also popular with the cycling crowd as the in-house operators organizes expeditions around Chiang Mai, as well as offering to rent their bicycles. | Royal Princess Hotel Chiang Mai: Very Comfortable Hotel, Well Located

We were in a group of 34 persons holidaying in Thailand and found this hotel to be excellent. Our room was recently refurbished, had plenty of room to move and upon arrival we were delivered a beautiful fruit platter. The breakfast included was of a high standard and we used the restaurant ( Garden Cafe ) for several evening meals, the hotel has 2 other upmarket restaurants. The staff were polite, efficient and gave good service, in fact when I enquired about a river cruise they contacted the operator and arranged a free pick up and return to hotel. I used the swimming pool each afternoon of our 5 day stay and found it to be clean and enjoyable, there is also a fitness centre adjacent to the pool. The hotel is located opposite the Night Bazaar and street market,we found this to be a positive as we could easily come and go. As we were a group touring we obtained an excellent deal, however I believe the normal daily charge is very reasonable. I can recommend this hotel as an excellent regional hotel.
Good accommodation, well located to night activities, local restaurants and the river. Theme: HotelComparison: about averageAddress: 112 Chang Klan Road Chiang MaiPhone: 66-53-2810-33Directions: Opposite the Night Bazaar and near the river.Website: www.royalprincess.com Other Contact: rpc@dusit.com
