Paradise in the Hills

General:
We went on a family trip with my parents. It is an ideal resort for family vacations. The resort is a bit of a distance from the city and other attractions but its good for a country side break.

The resort covers an area of about 40-50 acres. There is a straight road leading from the main road to the main building where you pass through 2 fords (dams) which flow over the roads. The road is lined with greenery and flowers on both sides. The bungalows are mostly 2/3 bedroom units. The resort is well light at night.

Bungalow Amenities: The bungalow comes with living, dining, 2/3 bedrooms, 2 bathroom, a full kitchen (fridge, electric stove, microwave, boiler, cup, bowls, plates, pans). The rooms are air-conditioned however on most nights it was cool enough as we kept all our windows open. Not too worry as all windows have well maintained insect screens. There is also a TV, DVD player and stereo system in the living room.

Facilities:
Spa - We did not try the spa but the prices were a bit expensive. You would get a better and cheaper service in the city.
Gym - As the gym shares the same building with the spa it can only be used from 7am to 10am, probably to avoid disruptions to the spa services.
Swimming pool - The pool is at the main building and hardly anyone was using it probably due to the cool weather. The pool is average size and we braved it on one of the evening but we hardly lasted there for 45 mins.

Restaurants:
There are 2 restaurants in the resort. The one in the main building serves Thai food and some western dishes. We ate lunch there on one of the days and it costs approximately USD8-10 for a hearty meal. I would recommend the Pad Thai (noodles) and Tom Yam Soup(not on menu but available on request). The second restaurant is a japanese restaurant and the food there is average at best.

Others:
For those that are RCI members the staff there deserve a special mention. Ms. Nook and her staff were extremely helpful and provided us quick service anytime we made a call to the office.

Unique Quality: There are elephants located on site if anyone is interested in feeding time or going for a ride.

The elephants make the place special

We stayed for a week here (wife, myself, kids 3, 5, 7) during Chinese New Year 2007. We were in a house not far from the main lobby, which was nice - nothing special, and more than a few holes in the screens for mosquitos to get in. But it was definitely "good enough."

Unique Quality: Major positives: elephants there every morning - we fed them breakfast every day, which was a big hit with the kids. Pool area was nice, service was pretty good

Negatives: Very far from the city (40 mins), and the drive in always made us car sick (VERY windy roads); playground had boards with nails sticking out. Pool area was nice, but water unbelievably cold!

I strongly advise AGAINST doing any of the excursions the hotels has organized....they are 3x more expensive than anyone else. Just ask for the local tourism magazine, and there are dozens of good operators who will come out to the Belle Villa to get you.

We ate at an Italian restaurant just a minute down the road (cannot remember name) which was great, especially the pizza. The resort restaurant got old after a few days.

My final advice - if you're gonna spend a week in Northern Thailand, spend 4 days or so here, and the other 3 in the city.
