Countryside Hotels with Swimming Pools Chiang Mai

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 24, 2009

Reading through the Virtual Tourist forum for Chiang Mai, Thailand, I came upon an old posting asking for suggestions for an affordable hotel with a swimming pool located in the countryside surrounding Chiang Mai. I would add a further criterion that is important to me: "Somewhere really quiet!" i.e. no karaoke bars within hearing distance! I have stayed at three such places during several visits to Chiang Mai in recent years, which I have listed below in alphabetical order. Whilst these suggestions may come too late for the person who originally asked the question in the forum, I hope they prove useful to others who may be looking for the peace and tranquility of an affordable resort hotel, within reasonable travelling distance of the city and airport.

1. Botanic Resort, Mae Sae, Mae Rim. This is a beautiful location about 40 minutes from Chiang Mai. The Queen Sirikit Botanic Gardens are within walking distance and it is also close to an elephant camp and Mae Sae Waterfalls. The Botanic Gardens showcase an incredible array of trees, plants and flowers, from all over the world - not just Thailand - and it is a gardener's paradise. If you want a relaxing few days away from tourist crowds this is a good place to stay. The hotel offers free transport twice a day to and from the city for those who suffer withdrawal symptoms from shopping malls, entertainment and clubs, or wish to visit some of the more central tourist attractions.

2. Centre of the Universe Chiang Mai Swimming Pool and Resort. If you want the best of both worlds, i.e. countryside and quick access to the city, this is a good choice. The resort is about 7 kilometres from the city centre, which can be reached in 10-15 minutes by taxi, and is surrounded by farms and orchards with views of Doi Suthep. You can walk for about 10 minutes down a country lane to the busy little village of Chang Khian, with shops, market stalls and traders. If you are into bird-watching (of the feathered variety!) as well as swimming, this is good place to stay as there are several sites close by where dozens of species can be observed. A listing of about 50 bird species within the resort gardens is posted on their website.

3. Mae Ping Home Stay, Doi Saket. This is quite a bit more expensive than the previous two but fits the criteria of being in the countryside with a swimming pool. The rooms are luxurious and the gardens are a riot of colour.

I am sure there are any number of other hotels in the area that fit the bill! Each place I have mentioned has a website which is easily found by copying the name of the hotel as above and pasting into Google, as I cannot find all listed on Virtual Tourist.

Unique Quality: Each of the three places I have mentioned provide good pools in which you can swim as opposed to merely paddle! They are all located in tranquil settings and have good views of the mountains.

A nice hotel outside Chiang Mai

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on March 31, 2007

I would call this hotel the "anti-stress" place by excellent. It is situated on the foothill of the Doi Suthep Mountain, some 15 km north to Chiang Mai. It' not a crowded place very quiet in the green mountains. When you are looking for some quiet days of relaxing, or/and some romantic holidays, this is a real paradise. Excellent swimming pool.
When you want to be every day in the middle of the city of Chiang Mai, it's a bit farway, even when the hotel offers you transport to town.
Very nice shaped gardens all around the hotel.

Directions: About 15 km north to Chiang Mai.
