I suggest you might want to look at a place called the Elephant Nature Park, near Chiang Mai. After visiting there, you will never ever want to see a camp where "elephants draw" and will want to see places like that shut down.

Short video of Elephant Nature Park from our visit there last year is on my homepage at:

Reason for my statement- the elephants are tortured to learn how to "draw for tourists".

I could not agree more! It is a disgrace what is being done to the elephants in those "nature reserves". Please do not add to the misery. Take a look at this page from a ecou tour company. I am not advocating the company, but the page will give you a better idea of what you are considering being a part of. Click on some of the links on he page. I warn you though, - it is disturbing.

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

A Chiang Mai General Tip

by l_joo

I went to Chiang Mai in year 2001. It was part of my long expedition from Kuala Lumpur to Tibet overland. On the way back home I stay a night at this bustling city full of tourists especially at night at the bazaar. I believe other members already built better pages than mine, so I leave this page to them.

After a couple of days of trekking, you probably are interested in some relaxing. Since we're in the upper north of Thailand, there's no sea nearby.. BUT there are some nice swimmingpools in Chiang Mai. I can recommend you the Sarah Health Club. Open from 10.00 untill 20.00 hours. It's across the British consulate. Outside the center.

Nightmarket in Chiang Mai

by Myndo about Night bazar

Hard to believe that there should be shops that actually only open when it gets dark, but so it is.
If you walk by in the morning, nothing is here but some empty stalls.
In the late afternoon the vendors arrive and begin to hang up and lay out the things they have to sell. They take it back down every morning and leave nothing there.
It really astounded me, because it was so much.

So many shops and shops. You can find everything you want and more, beginning from clothes to jewelry, to decorations, to ... I don´t know what.

Also it is quite huge. I think I only saw 2 streets, but there are many more. You can walk in and find side roads and shops in the houses...

Take care you don´t get into a buying frenzy - even if it is quite cheap (and don´t forget to haggle) ... remember the place in your luggage and the weight is limited. Casual

Kanthoke dinner

by solopes about Khum Kaew Palace Kantoke

It’s an experience that anyone must live.

The food is good, as almost everywhere in Thailand, but distributed in small dishes, allowing you to taste everything. But the greatest point is the show, with the delicate Thai dances performed close to you, as you are eating. And if you saw my Czech page, you know that I'm a folk dance lover!
