Staying Near the Night Bazaar

Coming Soon - I just booked a night at this hotel. I just wanted a simple joint that is not too far from the night bazaar for convenience sake. The reviews about this place is far from ideal but heck, it's only for one night.

Good tourist class hotel in Night Bazaar area

The Duangtawan Hotel, located on Loikroh Road, is a new hotel in Chiangmai. It is located just next to the Night Bazaar and next to the Surigongse Hotel. I stayed at the Duangtawan Hotel during my recent trip to Chiangmai from 14 - 18 December. For 1200 Baht a night including buffet breakfast, it is really good value for money. For a tourist to Chiangmai, I would recommend this hotel as it is right smack in the heart of the tourist area.

Unique Quality: The rooms offer a great view of the city. My room had a commanding view of the hills and I could see Doi Suthep glistening in the distance. The hotel also offers good aromatherapy Thai massage at 460 Baht for 2 hours.
The only drawback is that for a hotel of its size, there are only 4 tiny elevators. If you have to catch a tour or a flight in the morning, do allow for ample time to wait for the elevator. All elevators could be full with guests and luggage in the morning especially during the peak travel season at the end of the year.

Another hotel next to the night market

Good customer service and friendly staff but the lifts sucks!!! It always get stuck and too full. Have to wait a few rounds before you can even get to enter!!! The lobby is one floor up and not an the entrance level

Tip: Take the lift up if you want a chance to go down or take the stairs. They have escalators for the first three floors and you walk down three floors less.

Unique Quality: Next to Suriwongse, so also very near to the night market. Has a free shuttle service to the Central Airport Plaza (Shopping Center) as it is in the same group of companies.

Central Duangtawan Hotel - Excellent for the money

by TripAdvisor Member AdrianLesher

Just checked into this hotel, and so far I love it. The room is equal to that in a good mid-range hotel in the United States (e.g. Hyatt, Sheraton). I am on the tenth floor and have a wonderful view of the city (mountain in the distance, temples dotting the cityscape). The bed is top-notch. Bathroom is very nice too.

Price is $25 US a night, with no breakfast included.

Definitely met my expectations

by TripAdvisor Member Arran_ABZ

Cental Duangtawan Hotel is in a great location in Chiang Mai, a stone's throw from the night market. The hotel is a modern, large establishment with excellent leisure facilities. My wife and I stayed on the 19th floor which offered great views over the city and to the hills over-looking Chiang Mai. The elevators are a bit slow which gets a bit frustrating when you are on the higher floors but hey it's no big deal really, after all you are on holiday, what’s the rush! The pool was really nice and fortunately the sun was shining when we were there so we could relax on the sun loungers and have a nice swim and cold Chang beer after a hard day sightseeing. The only down side to the pool was the noise from the construction of a nearby building site (another hotel no doubt), but as I soon discovered you cannot escape the on-going construction and development anywhere in Thailand these days! The breakfast at the hotel offered a good mix and was excellent for setting us up for the day ahead. The hotel seems really popular with Japanese and Korean guests but in fairness there was a real mix of nationalities staying there, although I think we were the only Scottish people! Overall, a great hotel that definitely met my expectations. Chiang Mai is a great place to visit, and the food at the night bazaar was amazing and really cheap. Definitely buy any souvenirs or clothes etc here in Chiang Mai as you will not find cheaper elsewhere in Thailand. Also, I would highly recommend doing a Thai cooking course while in the city as it was great experience (we went with Ban Thai Cooking who were excellent). Also take the opportunity to get a great Thai massage at a place called Let’s Relax which is really close by to the hotel at the Chiang Mai Pavilion, well worth it to chill out for an hour and for only 400THB. Pick-up service from the airport was great and took away the stress of taxis etc.

Good Budget Choice

by TripAdvisor Member Melbsteve

The hotel is well located opposite the night market and is within a 100 yards of several good english pubs, a starbucks and the old town, although transport in Chang Mai isnt a problem as you can get a tuk tuk to pretty much anywhere for a pound or two.
The hotels internal decor and carpets are a bit tired, its worth paying a bit more money and getting a club room as they are large and quite modern ( taking into account the usual thai plumbing!! ). The cable TV selection is limited with not many movie channels to choose from. The pool is large enough with poolside bars and lots of sunbeds.
The best thing about the hotel is the buffet breakfast which really is excellant with a good variety of bacon, eggs, sausages and cereals, with lots of toast, fruit and asian foods as well. We also tried the buffet lunch which was also excellant and good value.
The gym is well equipped but the sauna and steamroom are quite small and only fit four or five people.
There is a live asian band on in the foyer most nights who are OK, with cheap cocktails being served in the local bar. There is a pay as you go internet PC near reception. The staff are very helpful and I didnt have any complaints or problems..this isnt the poshest hotel in chaing mai but it is excellant value for money and I would recommend it..

Amazing!! Truly the equivalent of a Hyatt, Hilton, etc...

by A TripAdvisor Member

After traveling throughout the region for three weeks, my girlfriend and I had gotten used to staying in mid-range hotels ($50-$75) and had gotten used to being very disappointed. Upon arriving in Chiang Mai, however, the Duangtawan was a breath of fresh air!

Located in the heart of Chiang Mai, just 1 block away from the night market, this hotel is the equivalent of a Hyatt, Hilton, etc. in the U.S. Very clean, a huge hotel, full serviced, etc. The pool is GREAT and relaxing, the gym is great, saunas and locker rooms very clean -- great.

Check out [-------] for good rates on all the hotels in Southeast Asia, and I think we got the Executive Suite (Top floor!) for $75, and a basic room, mid-week, (for our journey back) for $28!!!

Definately worth the price of admission, and from what I heard from our friends about their hotel, the Duangtawan is a steal!

Happy travels!

Luxury at Bargain Prices

by TripAdvisor Member Glophie

Central Dunagtawan was the cheapest yet most luxurious hotel we encountered throughout a month long stay in Thailand. We stayed in Chiang Mai for 4 nights and found the hotel's location ideal for the night market and several cheap bars (55 baht for a cocktail!)Our superior room was enormous, with 2 large windows offering lovely views over the city, a comfortable bed and new furniture. The bathroom was clean with a separate bath and powerful shower. Breakfast was a real treat with delicious croissants, fruit, a great choice of hot food and something to suit every nationality. The pool was clean and larger than we expected for a city centre hotel, and there were lots of free sunbeds. The staff were friendly and courteous and always ready to help. Overall, we would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for excellent accommodation at a bargain price, and will definitely stay here again when we return to Chiang Mai.

Highly recommended

by TripAdvisor Member gua

The hotel was indeed a pleasant surprise considering its price range. The rooms are huge and clean and well stocked with quality items. For example, their slippers are soft and cushiony, not the paper ones that other mid range hotels provide.

Location wise, the hotel is right across the road from the night bazaar and near to starbucks, if you need your coffee fix. I don't think there is a better location in Chiang Mai.

Service is very good, porters stand at the door to open it for you and are extremely helpful when you need anything. I saw the hotel staff taking bribes from the driver of the tuk tuk we took when leaving the hotel but since the price we paid wasn't overly exhorbitant I figured its not that big an issue.

The only complaint about the hotel is the extremely slow lift, which I have a deep impression of because one of the days I was feeling unwell and nearly fainted in the lift from being stuck in there with many others for such a long time. However, on a normal day the slow lift is just a mild irritant.
