Old City or Riverside

by ytanay

Hi all
I'm planning to go to Chiang Mai and am wondering which is a better area to stay, the old city or the riverside?
I'd like to be walking distance from the Sunday market and the night bazaar, so which area should i look at?

Thanks

I loved the old city but riverside is also OK. Both are about the same distance - as long as you don't go too far down the river or to the far end of the old city! - from the markets and it is walkable.

There is a lot more character and life in the old city but there are a lot of new places opening up around the river which is making the area a nice place to stay.

Last visit I stayed riverside - next visit I am going to go old city.

It may depend upon the type of accom you are after as to where you stay. Have a wonderful time.

Thanks cafank.
I think the Old city area sounds more interesting. Besides, I've read that the Sunday market is better than the night bazaar.

Can anyone suggest a clean, green place to stay in the old city? My budget's around THB1000/night for a room with private bathroom. I've seen a lot of guesthouses and hotels online but would appreciate if i can get a recommendation from someone who's stayed there. Thanks

Well, there are quite a few in the 'old quarter'. One lane/alley in particular which offers quite a few budget to moderate accomodations is right behind the Montri Hotel.

Also if you want a great meal and enjoy relaxing with a 'riverside view', then have dinner at the Good View Restaurant on the riverbank of the Ping. It's about a 15 minute walk from Taphae Gate. Also offers live music at night.

Thanks seagypsy for the tip. I remember you also gave me very useful info on Laos earlier this year.
By the way, I ended up taking a VIP bus from Vientiane to LP and the bus was ok but the journey was a bit too long for me so I flew back from LP to VT. I thoroughly enjoyed LP....just chilling and met some really nice people there too!

Yes, I can understand wanting to take a flight back down from LP after taking the VIP bus up. God knows I've gone up and down by bus enough times that now days, I prefer to fly. Given the cost of a oneway flight between LP and VTE, it's worth the extra cost to get there in less than an hour versus 10+hours on the road. But the advantage of taking the bus/road at least once is that you get to see the wonderful scenery en route.

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

BIRD WATCHING

by balhannah

Something I like to do when on holidays, is to try and see some of the local Birdlife, and find out about the Bird.

Doi Inthanon, is a Bird Watcher's Paradise, with 382 known species that either live or migrate to here.
THE BEST TIME TO SEE BIRDS IS FEBRUARY TO APRIL.

It is peaceful, and you can hear the Birds twittering. When I was there, there were professional photographers set up, waiting for (that )moment!
I also saw Birds, trying to photograph them was hard. I heard and saw them in the Trees, then, at the Cafe/Kiosk, they had Bananas for the Birds to feed on.

Its a good spot to sit and watch what comes to feed.

Muay Thai Training Camp

by M.E.R.V

A short distance out of the city centre takes u here where many expats or even just visitors come for muay thai training. I'm not sure if they charge for training but I guess they do. People train here to join competitions for money. The camp has rooms as well as bathroom with cold shower. One of my mates stayed here an entire year surviving only on money won in competitions. His visa was extended by going for day trips across the border to Burma(Myanmar) and Laos!

All You Need's A Tuk-Tuk

by alvis

The best and probably only means of travel around Chiang Mai is the Tuk-Tuk. They are quite cheap but sort the price out before getting on and barter if the price seems expensive.

And it is pronounced took - took not tuck - tuck as many foreigners will say.

Thai at its best

by RAINBOWWINGS about Antiques House

This is a delightful restaurant if you want a little peace and quiet away from the hustle bustle of central Chiang Mai and its buzzy nightlife. Although only 5mins walk from the night market, whilst sitting in the lovely gardens of this antique teak house you could be many miles away. Just a hop away from the River Ping, I can highly recommend this restaurant for both its food and decor. With very low tables and chairs(not so good for the less agile) set in a beautifully designed Thai garden, the food is almost secondary, but none the less, delicious. Charming staff altho a little slow, but who cares when sitting in amazing surroundings, and an excellent menu. Its got to be the crab curry.

Elephant Conversation Centre

by slasty

If there is one thing you should do when visiting northern Thailand it is visiting the Elephant Conversation Centre. Located about an hour out of Chiang Mai the centre provides a place for abandoned, injured or mistreated Elephant.

The Camp has Elephant Rides, Elephant shows, Elephant Dung paper factory and muesuem espcially on the famous white elephants. The Centre also has an Elephant Hospital which looks after and cares for ill and injured Elephants. You are able to visit the Hospital and see the injured Elephants.

The Centre also runs one, three day and 30 days Mahout courses where you learn to ride, and command elephants. We did the one day course last year and it was one of the most special days of my life. They truly are one of the most amazing aminals. The Centre is definetly worth visiting is offers something different to the normal Elephant camps around Northern Thailand.
