Urgent:Festival/interesting dates in Chiang Mai
by teevee
Would like to know if there are any interesting dates in the first 8 months of the year that will be make a trip to Chiang Mai extra special. Or if there is a webiste i could go to for such info? It is quite urgent.
Wesak Day is quite important isn't it as Buddhists celebrate it? Is it a good time to go? Thank you.

There are lots of web sites out there to answer your questions. www.chiangmai-thai.com
or just google chiang mai calandar events. Some events are at a local level or even a specific market for the day, depends on what you are looking for. Best national festival for me is Loy Krathong.
happy travels

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai
Songthaew
by frankcanfly
As in Bangkok, there are numerous TukTuks in Chiang Mai, but they are not as pushy here.
You can also catch a Songthaew (see photo) They don`t have set routes, just flag one down and tell them where you want to go. You will ride with others going in the same general direction. It`s an example of Para-transit at it`s finest.
Go to visit the countryside.

I recommend very much to go and visit also the countryside and the villages in the mountains. It is very interesting and in some places you will meet very friendly local people living and working in traditional communities.
Getting to/from Chiang Mai by train
by idy
Travellers heading to or from Chiangmai to Bangkok can save on 1 night's accomodation by catching a night train. There are several different classes to choose from, depending on your budget.
A second-class lower bunk sleeper in an air-conditioned coach will cost approximately 720 baht, while a second-class lower bunk sleeper in a non-air-conditioned coach will cost about 420 baht. Most of the sleepers tend to be taken up by foreign travellers.
In the morning, there will be attendants coming round to fold the beds away into seats. If you look Thai, don't be surprised if a uniformed conductor/officer comes and wakes you up demanding something loudly in Thai in a brash manner.
Copies of the train schedule and tickets can be obtained at train stations.
Lanna traditional food: Kuntoke
by pattayaraj about Khum Kaew Palace
I went to this restaurant for Kuntoke dinner . The location is in the same area as Vista hotel. The restaurant building formerly was a house of Chao Keaw Naowarat, the Lanna royalty. The dinner began at 8.00PM. They served Lanna traditional food such as Nam Prik , Sticky rice and Lanna sausages. Not just food ,they offered traditional music and performances such as Lanna dance, Lanna drum playing ,..... The price per person is 100 Bahts. Kuntoke
Maetang Elephant Camp - 3-in-1 package
by aukahkay
About an hour's drive out of Chiangmai is Maetang Elephant Camp, one of the few elephant camps in the Chiangmai area. An elephant safari is something not to be missed on your trip to Chiangmai. To arrange for an elephant safari, visit the many tour agencies located in the Changklan Night Bazaar. A full day tour costs around 1200 baht with buffet lunch included.
I chose the Maetang Elephant Camp safari as it offers a 3-in-1 package - elephant ride, ox cart ride and river rafting. You get to ride on the elephant for one hour, then return to the base camp on an ox cart. This is followed by a sumptous buffet lunch. After lunch, a bamboo raft will take you down on idyllic Mae Ping River.
Remember to bring along several 20 Baht notes - you will need it to buy bananas or sugar cane to feed the elephants and to tip your elephant trainer, ox cart handler and river rafter.
