There are overnight trains, 2. class non aircon upperberth is comfotable (€10-16?).
Close borderpost Chiang Khong to Laos (boat to Luang Prabang, visa avaiable at the border), Mae Sai to Myanmar (only places nearby, short visa avaiable at the border).Border crossing without visa only to Malasia (sleeper to Had Yai was in january B670, €12)

Yeah, there is train service to Chiang Mai. For the overnight sleeper try to get your ticket a couple days ahead of time to reserve a bunk. The sleeper train will get into Chiang Mai early in the morning and you have the whole day ahead of you.

There is a Golden Triangle Tour that you can sign up for. This tour makes a stop in Chiang Rai so tourists can hop over the border and get stamped out and back in with some new dates in your passport. I did two of these tours at different times and we had to wait for some stragglers to finish processing back in.

For tours in Bangkok and Chiang Mai just find the nearest travel agency and they will have a menu selection of tours to choose from. In Chiang Mai the Golden Triangle tour is popular, there is a stop at some villages along the way. Most of the tours leave in 9 person passenger vans. You can even make arrangements to spend the night in Chiang Rai and go back the following day on another van.

Good luck.

For the train, the lower berth is probably slightly better than the upper one for you, as I remember that the upper one was slightly smaller.

You can cross the border into Burma at Mae Sai in Chiang Rai province. If you prefer to travel around by tour, there will be plenty that you can choose from in Chiang Mai or in Chiang Rai. Alternatively, you can do it on your own by taking a bus to Chiang Rai town, and then switch to the local bus to the border. Your best bet for a visa run is to Burma since you will be heading north. There is a cost for a one-day visa. But I can't remember if it is $5 or $10. You'll need a more expensive visa into Laos. And if you are coming down south, many countries don't require a visa into Malaysia.

Yes, there is the overnight train, which is much more pleasant. Unless they changed the law, the standard tourist visa stamp is 30 days. However, if you are in Chiang Mai and need to extend, all the tour companies offer a "visa run" to the Myanmar border.

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

Little Pinky No Pants

by vigi

This is another Jungle Kid, the Little-Pinky-No-Pants. He is good at asking for candies, playing with baby puppy, riding a dog while twisting its ears like riding a motorbike, and playing with knife. He chop his fingers, without crying, laughing instead! I was woundering why these kids don't cry even he cut his fingers. Perhaps their born character is happy? Or perhaps the drug? I don't know...

Trekking around Chiang Mai

by thedouglas

This was a fantastic family activity. My kids are fairly typical computer bound Western adolescents, who require mobile phone social outreach and screens to absorb them. However, they all enjoyed the 4 day, 3 night trek we embarked on - and all managed the uppy bits with packs on quite well - better than their mother anyway!

We passed through and stayed in some interesting Karen tribe villages - and saw how the hilltribes really live - having the privilege of staying in them for the nights, and the meals prepared by the villagers then and during the day.

The diversity of standards in the villages was interesting - and it seemed that the further away from sealed roads etc., the neater and cleaner the environment was, and there was undoubtedly a greater adherence to the "traditional" ways. We were always greeted with friendliness and felt welcome - no full-on peddling either - although we were invited to visit houses and see the village crafts. We loved it, one and all - and actually did some talking and spent real time together as a family.

Airport to City and back to Airport

by missbean

Airport taxi is quite afforable 120baht per car flat rate. Journey takes about 15mins to Night Bazaar area.

Our plane back home was scheduled very early at 9am.We couldnt find any taxi to bring us to airport unless we pay 70baht per person (we find it too expensive for a group of 4). Managed to find tuk-tuk to bring us for price of 100baht. Sits 2-3persons. We find it very exciting especially in an early Sunday morning where there are few vehicles around. As its the winter season,it was cold and windy during the ride but we enjoyed it very much!

Seafood...

by PS_Lee81 about Anusan Food Market

If you like seafood very much, you really have to go to this place. This place is called Anusan Food Market. There are several big stalls selling all kinds of seafood you can think of. Not only that, they can be cooked in various way: steam, grill, roast, etc... Besides that, you can also order for local-style food if you like. Just tell them, they will prepare for you.

I saw some photos of special ice-cream at a stall there and was thinking of getting some ice-cream for dessert.. Then i walked around the area to next stall to see if there is anything nice to try. I was not a seafood lover, but i decided to try the local-style mussel as the photos they showed me looks very delicious. Then i went back to the previous stall to order some ice-cream... to my surprise, they didn't want to serve me because i was sitting at next stall. I was very upset with the way they did their business and i never get anything to drink at all... And honestly, the mussel I ordered really suck!
Just becareful of what and where you want to order or else you will end up not getting the food you like. Ask around for the price and try to see how good they're serving the food...

Beside the seafood, there were some Halal food serve opposite the area. For those Muslim tourists, this will be the best place for them to eat...

Tunnel Temple (Wat U Mong)

by alvis

A tuktuk driver took us to Wat U Mong (which is around 10 miles out of town) where he waited on us to check out the place and then drive us back to our hotel and will cost 180 baht (less than £3).

I loved this place, it was the most peaceful place i've ever been to. The monks live here and pray in the temple and being a westerner this was very surreal and | was quite amazed to hear them. The place was empty when we were there other than us and the monks who live on the compound. It is located in a forest and it's main focus is the temple underground in a tunnel.

After the hour we went back to the tuktuk and on back to the hotel. It is probably best to get the tuk-tuk driver to wait as you may wait all day before a tuktuk turns up here.
