Day Trips

by sunset_gal

Hello, we have about 4 days in Chiangmai and hope to see some things outside of the city. Is one day enough to cover the city's sights?

We have hotel bookings for the duration and would like to go on day trips. Do you have any recommendations for what to see eg hilltribes, waterfalls etc? Which is an inexpensive tour agency to go with and what is considered an ok price?

Thanks!

Re: Day Trips

That depends on what you want to see in a day.

Was there for 4 days in April 2007 with my family.

Still have the taxi guy's number who tooks us around for 500 baht a day, if you are interested or else you will paying quite abit.

Things to see and do- elephants, orchids, temples and more temples, local cultural dances(skipped this one) and of course if you are interested to go to chiang rai(which is quite a distance- i skipped it for more detailed roaming in chiang mai).

Would be happy to help - i can be reached at nightlord@gmail.com

A couple of other (half)day trips from Chiang Mai:
- Lamphun with the Wat Prathat Haripunchai
- Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep on a hill above Chiang Mai (forget the very commercialised hill village of Doi Pui)
- Borsang (the umbrella village0 and the Sankampaeng Hot Springs

In my opinion is one day enough for the sights of Chiang mai itself.

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

The women work hard! Part 16

by herzog63

In this village it appeared that the women work very hard! I noticed in the fields that it was only women working. And the women would haul quite large loads on their backs as they walked with the small horses. The men seemed like they were building houses and relaxing. We did ask our guide some questions about it but I don't really remember the answers.

Basket weaving

by SumTingWong

If you make it to Sangkhaphaeng you should try your hardest to visit the village of Ban On Luai Mae On!!! This is a small, friendly, and traditional village. Here you will find many interesting craftsmen, including a famous, old, and friendly basket weaver. If you ask him to show you how to make a basket he will be more than glad to spend time with you (note that he only speaks Thai). He makes some amazing baskets and sells them for literally nothing (20-60 Baht per basket). The experience is great!

Travelling to and from Chaing Mai

by Christopher03

chaing Mai is an easy destination to get to, it is also easy to travel further north or accross the Laos border. To the south there is a bus and train network that travel through to Sukathai and Aiytaia. The trains often book fast in the main season and is advised to book two or three days befor travel. Busses to Bangkok go quite regulary with 6 different companies operating. Most common are nigt busses that leave around 7pm and arrive between 5 and 6 in the morning. Chaing Mai also has a domestic and international airport, flying from/ to Mae Sariong, Bangkok, Hanoi and to Mandalav ( for Thai & Myanmar only)

McDonalds is EVERYWHERE

by danlisha about McDonalds

No guessing what you can expect from McDonalds! Unlike back home, it offers something special. Its a Double Big Mac Meal! YES.. Just look at the pictures. And you still have the option to supersize that too.. WOW

And of course, how can us ladies resist having a McFlurry during a hot day in Chiang Mai.. You got to be kidding..

Doi Suthep

by Luchonda

The temple on the Hill or 306 steps to heaven
located at about 15 km from Chiang Mai
A panoramic view on the City is top - if the weather is good !The temple was builded in the 14th century and as many temples in Thailand a base of relics from the Buddha
