How to get to Chiang Rai

by msbinsaid

Hi, I plan to land in Chiang Mai airport and make my way to Chiang Rai first. Would the airport taxi do a trip to Chaing Rai..if yes approximatly how much would they charge.

I heard we can take a bus to chaing rai (there is a bus every hour I guess). Please advice where I should go to take this bus and how long will it take to reach Chiang Rai city? Thank you very much.

Why not just fly directly to Chiang Rai?

I am looking into it but currently no flight from Singapore to Chiang Rai.

You can fly to bangkok and transfer into a domestic flight to Chiang Rai. Airasia and Thai Air are flying that route. It would cost between 1000 to 1500 THB if you take a taxi from Chiang Mai airport. This price is negotiable.

Of course, the cheapest way would be to take the bus from the Arcade Bus terminal in Chiang mai.

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

Don't point the bottom of your feet

by SumTingWong

Don't point the bottom of your feet (bare) at anyone or anything sacred. This is also a very important rule. Specifically, by the culture, pointing a bare heel is very bad and extremely disrespectful. The bottoms of the bare feet are considered the most unholy part of the body. And there is good cause also: Thais accept the fact that bare feet are meant to be dirty. Thais are very clean and shower sometimes more than three times a day, but the bottom of their feet are always dirty. Squatting toilets only affect the bottom of the feet. This is why the bottom of the feet is unholy so don't point them at anyone (including pictures and or statues of the Buddha, famous monks, and the king). Be warned, if you break this rule, even accidentally, Thai people will be disgusted with you, normally the Thais are very forgiving and understanding but this one is very bad, although may seem silly to you.

Walking Street

by alvis

Just off Moon Muang Road you will find walking street. As far as I know it is open everyday from early. Walking Street is a network of streets covered in stalls selling local crafts. I loved this street, it really showed the charm of Chiang Mai with the temples the hills and the locals bartering. The shopping is also decent and local craft etc. will be found here. There is not as many replica / dodgy gear here compared with the Night Bazaar it is more local craft i.e paintings.

Mini van

by SumTingWong

Travel company's mini vans are the easiest way to travel around the Chiang Mai area. There are HUNDREDS of travel companies in Chiang Mai that will provide cheap and good minivan transportation all over the Chiang Mai province and more! So if you want to visit Sangkhaphaeng don't take a taxi, go for a mini van if available (if you have a group).

Tropical Fruits

by vigi

Thailand is a country abounding in a variety of tropical fruits. A large variety of fruit drinks appear in the forms of pure fruit juice, concentrated fresh juice mixed with water, and also as a major ingredient in some bottled soft drinks. Here you will see small stands along the roadside, both in the cities and in the outlying areas, with transparent tanks of various colored liquids. These are different types of fruit juices indigenous to Thailand, and they are all great thirst-quenchers, especially during the hot months between March and July. There is a great variety of fruits in Thailand used in drinks, including Bananas, Guava, Papaya, Oranges, Pineapple, Grapes, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Coconuts, Litchi, Longan, Mangoes, Rambutan, Gooseberries, Strawberries, Rose Apples and Apples , Lime and other Citrus Fruits, plus the unique and very exotic Tamarind.

Wat Doi Suthep

by aussiejen

Doi Suthep is one the places you must go to when in Chiang Mai. It's well worth the steep winding drive up the mountain to get there.
Once your driver drops you off you can either choose to walk up the 300 steps to the wat or catch the enclosed cable car. We chose to do the latter...it was too hot to walk! But we did walk down the steps on our way out!
The views over Chiang Mai are magnificent.
This wat was established in 1383, it is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples.
We were blessed by a delightful monk who spoke a little English.
