by vuzu

Could anyone please tell me what is the best way to travel from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai? HOw long is the journey? HOw long should I stay in Chiang Rai? Thanks.

RE: Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai

There are local buses departing from the Arcade Bus Station in the northeast section of Chiang Mai but there are also VIP buses that take only about 3 hours to Xiang Rai's main bus station. Chiang Rai is a great base from which to do excursions up to Doi Tung, the Golden Triangle point of chiang saen, etc. I'd recommend 1 day for Rai itself and 2-3 days for surrounding sites.

Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

by balhannah

Interested in different kinds of Fruits and Plants not found in your country?
Then there is a good chance of seeing something entirely different in an Akha & Lisu village.

I saw a Longan Fruit tree, which was loaded with fruit, (in big clusters on the Tree), but not quite ready to eat. The fruit is not that big in size, about 1" diameter. We did get to peel this succulent fruit that was fragrant, sweet, and extremely juicy. It has a smooth thin leathery brown skin and a kind of translucent, white coloured, grape-like fruit inside, with a black seed.

They also had Dragon Fruit growing, which is like a Cactus, and it had a beautiful lemon coloured flower. This fruit is often in Hotels for fruit for breakfast. The colour of the skin is a beautiful bright pink/red, with translucent white flesh and tiny black seeds.

There also was the unusual plant which is in the photo. We were told about it, but as my memory is bad and I didn't have paper with me, I have forgotten its name.
If by chance you know, could you please leave me the answer. Thanks...

Where to buy souvenirs & cheap clothing

by heywinks about Night Bazaar

This is the best place to buy your souvenirs & clothing (after you`ve ruined your clothing on your trek!). You can bargain at all the stalls!
There is also a food court in the night bazaar where you can eat pad thai, pad see yiew, mango with sticky rice, noodle soups, etc while being entertained by Thai dancers on stage. Wooden elephants, masks, handmade & silver jewelry, fake designer goods, Thai clothing, t-shirts, sandals, sneakers, CDs/DVDs, photo albums/notebooks made of recycled paper, etc. Food court dishes are about $1/dish or less.

Song Thaew (Red Taxi)

by vigi

The most common public transportation is "song thaew" which means the Red Taxi. Song Thaew is a pickup truck converted for carrying passengers and some cargo. These vehicles are regulated and licensed by the government. In Chiang Mai, red song thaews roam the city and are free to travel anywhere. Simply wave your hand, stop one, and ask told the driver where you ant to go before boarding. Fare within the city is nomally 10 Baht, to airport 20 Bhat. Prices negotiable for longer distances.

Midnight Chicken!

by Silvereye about i'm not sure :(

When my friends first told me about a food they called midnight chicken, which I was told was unique to Chiang Mai, I amused and curious.....The place which sells this special chicken apparently only opens after midnight.....hhhhmmmm how can they profit if they only open after midnight?!? night, being a little bit peckish at 3am, my friend and I hunted for the elusive midnight chicken and to my surprise the place was packed.....we even had to queue to get served ;).....well it was well worth it as our hunger was quickly satisfied by that elusive midnight chicken..... Try the midnight chicken with sticky rice as well as the fried pork.....yum! yum!

At the Zoo!

by HasTowelWillTravel

If you're looking for a relaxing and fun day, head to the Chiang Mai Zoo. It is a very pretty area with all manner of creatures, from reptiles to birds. I spend hours watching the hornbills jabber and talk and try to escape. They're quite intelligent creatures. And one of the highlights is the pair of pandas that were given to Thailand by the Chinese government for the Queen's birthday several years ago. They are housed in a modern facility with lots of space to play and romp in. Definitely a nice place to roam around without leaving the city limits.
